Well, I picked up the bass when I was 10 for the express purpose of playing in the youth praise band. I've played with those same guys ever since and I'm 28 now. We're pretty tight. I also play for a worship leader down the road by the name of Mark Roach. You can check out some of his stuff here. Mark Roach I've also got my own website, www.dustinsweeps.com

I think it may be a great instrument that shows how the low harmonies and bass lines that accentuate the melody and strengthen it not trampling on it while having its on medley. Perfect mental training straight over to the bass guitar. Just give me the key and change ups in the song. Giddy up!!!!

Well we tired soon of just cover songs of rock bands who we loved their sound of course (pearl jam nirvana soundgarden) but that was just for pure fun. We quickly started writing our own stuff. Since I was writing the lyrics of the song we wrote we automatically became a "christian" rock band members changed around a few times through a few years. We had a great time lifting the name of Jesus and opening a few eyes on what Christian music was to many people. Our style was........ Original . Anyway.... I had in the meantime switched to bass firstly because no one else wanted to and we needed one. Also if I was to play bass I wanted it to be great. Not someone who doesn't know how to play guitar in the first place. Unlike most people think oh he plays bass he must no be very good at the "real" guitar. but when I started I loved it so much I am the bass player all the time since. Those bands are history of course, but I have played in worship services every week till the present and have been blessed to be given the opportunity to serve and play for Him and to Him till now and hope to for eternity. Woooohooooo

I play in a praise band up in Massachusetts. Here is a little of my back story.
I played drums in a local originals/ cover band called Drive Theory. My friend, the vocalist/ guitarist, who is a long time member of the local Methodist church contacted the pastor (Pastor Rusty) about having our band play some fundraisers for the church. In order to promote these fund raisers we played (as a duo) because our bassist worked on Sunday mornings before church service in the church. Many of the parishioners liked our music (we were always a very family friendly band) and the pastor asked if we would be willing to be involved in the church more. We would often play bars on Friday and Saturday nights then we would play the church on Sunday mornings. After about 1 year of doing those gigs Drive Theory split up.
After taking about 4 months off the vocalist/guitarist decided to put together another band. Because I run my own business I was hesitant to get involved in a band because of the time commitment. I agreed to manage the band and help them book shows. After 2 months of trying to get the band off the ground the band folded.
Then Pastor Rusty asked the vocalist/guitarist if he would be able to put together a praise band for church services. He asked me if I was interested but I was tired of Drums, and because of my business I was hesitant to put in the time with a new set of musicians in order to get the project off the ground. He again put together a band, a 4 piece group, 2 guitars, bass and drums and began working them to get them ready for playing during service. Then the bassist informed him 1 week before their first performance that he would be unable to play. My friend called me and asked if I knew of any bassists who could fill in. None came to mind, then he asked me if I would be willing to learn bass and play in the praise band while they sought a new bassist. I decided to give bass a go and now, about 2 months later I am still playing bass in the praise band. I have officially become the permanent bassist of the group, and I am having more fun doing this than any other musical endeavor that I have ever been a part of.
Prior to playing bass in this praise band I had one week of experience on the bass (the one week before our first performance), 8 years of noodling on the guitar (when I went off to college I saved some money and my parents gave me about $400 buy a martin acoustic guitar because I could not take my drums with me to school) and I have about 16 years experience on drums, including about 8 years of actual gigging experience (i played in a few bands in college (borrowing drum sets for the shows) and I have played gigs in my prior band with the vocalist/guitarist).
I look forward to reading more of your comments here in this thread. |

I never thought that playing a trombone back in the 7th grade ( that was given to me from a christian friend of my parents and was pretty much the deciding factor of what instrument I played in school because my parents didnt have the money to buy or rent any instrument ) would set me up to use the talents that He gave me to further His kingdom, today.

I've been playing acoustic guitar with my Church group for a little over 4 years. I have wanted to play another instrument for some time. I have tried to become an electric-lead player for the last 3 years, but I'm just not gettin' it. About 3 months ago, a friend gave me a Dean 4-string bass. I've caught on pretty quickly. So, I talked to the Praise/Worship coordinator about playing bass. The coord. was very quick and excited with his yes answer. So, I went out, this last weekend, and bought a brand new Fender American Standard 4-string P-Bass. Still waiting for a few accessories to arrive via brown truck. I have a little time before I start playing (bass) with the Worship group. I won't get on the list until April at the earliest. Meanwhile, I'm still playing acoustic two weeks, this month.
We are a ah... medium-sized Church. 2 campuses. Avg weekly attendance around 1300. We have a 5-piece band at each campus, every week. Sometimes we add in some brass instrument players. But, most weeks it's drums, keyboard, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and bass guitar. We play a lot of Tomlin, Crowder, Hillsong type stuff. A mix of the upbeat and the slow-pretty songs. |

28 years old...I play in two worship bands presently. I do my best to introduce elements of slap and funk into the contemporary worship music, with varying degrees of success!
I've been blessed with a love of music and great rhythm, so I'm just paying it back. |

Right now in the Southland many schools are having their tubas and sousaphones stolen, they think for banda bands. At the rate it is going trombones and bass trombones may be all that is left for the kids

| | IXΘYΣ | | Join Date: Feb 2012 Location: Michigan | | Hello all,
I've commented a couple times but haven't introduced myself yet. I played electric guitar in high school and tenor sax before that. But I haven't played anything for about 20 years now. I'm 39, married, 3 kids and serve as an elder in my church right now.
I've been running sound for one of the praise bands at my church. They were talking about how they wished they could add a bass and the Spirit of the Lord moved within me and I said, hey why not me? It'll take a bit to learn, but with God's help all things are possible right?
So about 4 weeks ago I bought a used, Dean Edge 09 M to get me started. I bought a small 10w practice amp and am now on page 17 of the Hal Leonard method book. I'm pretty excited. I am finding I struggle a bit but when I come back the next time it comes easier. So I'm building a base for my bass playing (pun intended). I am also relearning reading music again. I also just restrung my bass with a set of Chrome medium flatwounds. So far I really like them.
I do have a question though. I'd like to continue the Hal Leonard method to get the basics and solid foundation down. But I would also really like to get playing this summer with the band. I was thinking of practicing tabs at the same time.
I was wondering what you thought of this?
I was reading PRACTICING WITH LASERS BY STEVEN GREGORY and figured I could do that with one of my slices being tabs.
Anyways, thanks for reading. I won't request a membership # until I really get to play with the band. And I will definitely let you all know when that happens! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
