Carrying on from last thread...

Ken - sorry, British humour at play again! I just thought Hutchinson was a particularly un-Italian name. Scottish, I believe.

Well, the good thing is that the engine noise will drown out any wrong notes.

Might happen to us on Sunday as well. One campus I'm playing at is 500 yards from Hill AFB, which is having an air show this weekend...

I went to Indy in 2010 with No Greater Love ministries (http://nogreaterlove.org/).
That's me on bass:

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen:

I'm lurking around here and just wanted to drop in and say hi.
Of course, I am retired now and have no problems not playing except for occasional practice every blue moon or so... I have one student and she picks up everything I teach. So either I am a pushover or one heck of a teacher.. (Most likely the former...)

Hope all of you guys are well. Just turned the big 4-0 this month...and I am shooting for number 39 next year folks....

Blessings..

Hi! Maybe it's a combination of good teacher and diligent student?

I'm posting here to answer a question that someone asked in the recently expired thread, but the thread is closed so I can't quote it.

BassPraiser had asked about using a footswitch via USB. Yes, they are most definitly out there.
I too saw how many people are flocking to the Ipad for electronic sheet music, and I had the same concerns. I have many songs that are 4 or more pages. I'm in the midst of setting up all my sheet music as pdf files. I bought an inexpensive windows based netbook, not much bigger than an ipad and you can get a used one for a little more than $100. I bought a 24" LCD moniotor and mounting it to a stand. Be sure to buy a monitor that has the VESA standard mounting holes in the back.

You can go on amazon and find USB footswitches. Some have good ratings and some dont. I bought one from this outfit:

http://www.delcomproducts.com/produc...ductnum=903604

It seems fairly robust. I bought the 4 button unit as shown, you can program it so that the keys can do whatever you want. I.E. a page left button, a page right button, a button to toggle between which file is displayed, and leaves the 4th button for future use.

I hooked it all up and it works.

In full disclosure I havent started using it in church yet.
I originally mounted my moniotor to one of the standard ProLine music stands from GC.
Once I got it all put togehter I wasnt happy with the stability of the rig, the monitor seemed to be a bit heavy for the music stand and I just wasnt satisfied. I have bougth another stand, a Gibralter GEMS unit, and my next step is to mount the monitor to the GEMS. Gibralter is top notch drum hardware and this will be a very stable solution. Now the only downside is that Gibralter only makes their hardware in chrome finish, and the end result will be somewhat aesteticaly unpleasing. So when I have it all done I wil need to strip it down again and take the Gibralter and sand the outer clearcoat off the chrome and epoxy coat it in flat black.

Man, I just played a crazy tough gig last night at a Vineyard church about an hour south of my house. It was hot, humid, in an acoustically horrible room, and I could only get a 4 channel mix into my monitor. Also, to top it off, I hadn't eaten anything all day. They brought food but everything they brought was against my diet so I couldn't eat it. However, God moved through the service and a lot of people were blessed so it wasn't a bad gig at all, just a tough one. I love my job!!!

I hate playing in humid sticky weather with my 5'ver. It has flats on it and man do they ever get sticky when the humidity goes up. I don't usually use a product like Finger Ease, but after the last extremely humid outdoor gig I'm seriously considering it.

Or I could just break out my 4 string P-bass for the outdoor stuff, it has pressurewounds on it.

Yeah, it sucked. I had a brand new set of Ken Smith Compressors (stainless rounds) on my 6'er. The only mistakes I made all night were when my fingers would stick to the strings and I wouldn't be able to slide up as fast so I hit a flat or sharp note. No one noticed though. I've learned to cover up my mistakes pretty good.

Have you ever played next to a smoke machine? Same thing, it makes your fingers sticky and gets in your face too. I played a 5 hour gig right next to one all night and my fingers were raw when I was done. That was on a brand new set of Sadowsky stainless on my 6'er.

Never been really close to the smoke machine, but thanks for the warning.

I was thinking rounds might make more of a difference, but from what you just said it certainly doesn't sound like it would be substantial. I think I'll try some finger ease next time we're outside.

I may start playing bass with a very small startup church where we won't have a drummer. I have a MacBook and an iPad, and I've seen some Macs used in live performances for loops. I assume that they are probably using some pricy software. Does anyone have any experience with using any free or cheap software in a live setting?

There are a lot of options out there.

We used to build loops using Fruity Loops (I think the name has changed to FL after they got sued by Kellog for infringing on their cereal name, lol)

You can trial it for free, I believe, and if you like it, the basic version is pretty cheap.

Of course, we always used them in tandem with a drummer. If you need to actually use it to replace a drummer, I don't have any experience there.

I have found the DR NEON strings work the best in humidity for me.
