Yes! Joaquin Evans from Bethel spoke this morning and the Helsers led Worship. Right now Andrew and Mary Kat Ehrenzeller are leading worship! Day and night, night and day, let incense rise!!

Andrew and Mary Kat recorded a new CD last week. Can't wait for that! Mary Kat and Justin were just on the new Jesus Culture - Emerging Voices CD.

The reason is the bass is the most helpful for people to pitch against (i.e. to help them sing in pitch).

The bassist (professional and has played in orchestras) said he once had a famous conductor he was under the baton of (he did say the name, but it escapes me) stopped the whole bang shoot one time and asked all on stage who was the most important instrument. No-one dared answer him (for fear of getting it wrong). He pressed them for an answer and once most had got it wrong he yelled "the bass, you're not listening to the bass!"

Oh, how I wish our MD was there!

That confirms my bumper sticker on my music stand that says........EVERYONE FOLLOWS THE BASS PLAYER.

My orchestra kids always ask why I have us set up with the cellos, bass and violas in the middle of the orchestra instead of stage left as it is in many orchestras. I tell them you have to listen from the bottom up.

Best of all, was the event took a couple of unexpected turns, and we did a number of substitutions on the fly. That would have been a nightmare with regular binders.

Anyway, here's our set list, before substitutions:

Glorious by Bryan Torwalt and Katie Torwalt in E
Rain Down by Martin Smith and Stuart Garrard in E
You Are Good by Brian Johnson and Jeremy Riddle in E
Great Big God by Robert Critchley in Em
King Of Glory (Your Face Outshines The Brightest Sun) by David Gate and Matt Redman in Dm
Your Kingdom Come by Kathryn Marquis in G
Hosanna (I See the King of Glory) by Brooke Fraser in C
Arise, Shine by Kathryn Marquis in Bm
Purest Love by Bob Sprenger in Gm
In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins in Gm
Open by Kathryn Marquis in Dm
Better Is One Day by Matt Redman in C
Break and Release by Kathryn Marquis in C
Pour Down by Kathryn Marquis in C
Let It Rain by Michael W. Smith in C
Holy by Matt Gillman in Dm
Holy And Anointed One by Vineyard in F
No Matter What by Kathryn Marquis in Bb
God I Look To You by Jenn Johnson/Ian MacIntosh in Bb
Sing Praise by FCDC Worship Team in Bb
Oh Lord You're Beautiful by Keith Green in C
10,000 REASONS by Jonas Myrin & Matt Redman in C
Awesome set. I'm trying not to be jealous.

Wow you guys must have some long services.

Tomorrow will be my first morning as bassist. I hope I do well. I've been playing for 12 years and i'm still slow at learning/memorizing new songs.

How Great is Our God
Hallelujah
I Could Sing of Your Love Forever

Normally the praise section will go about 30 minutes. The pastor might call for a meet and greet which we often improvise over which may go on for an indeterminate time. Also an extended intercessory prayer might be called for at anytime and we have our "standards" which we don't need charts or chord sheets for which we can jump in on once we identify the key the piano or guitarist, depending upon who was leading at the moment is in. It is not unheard of for a pastor to decide we will just pray and there will be no message that day so tops on any given Sunday is about 90 minutes although we only had a 30 minute rehearsed and charted set.

5String - Glad to hear you have a permanent home now. Should result in a little less stress over the sound system and stage set-up.

On 'soprano bass' today. Have most of 'Our God' by Chris Tomlin learned for that on.

Music director wants to start learning 'Salvation Is Here'. I'll be learning the bass part in case our regular player isn't up to it. Although, the tabs I've seen aren't really hard. Just have to keep that drive going.

You get in on it by hanging out here so welcome aboard! If you want an actual membership number I believe all you have to do is ask. Or do we still require prospective members to recite Psalm 119 from memory ... backwards ... in Hebrew?

Had a new experience today. For a Diversity class, my wife was required to attend an event outside of her culture. Being that we are both white, middle-class people, we decided we would attend what many refer to as a "black" church (Read: absolutely no offense intended). We chose Lighthouse Free Life Center Church in Grand Rapids, MI, the home church of Marvin Sapp (I've heard his music a lot on YouTube; searching Gospel bass) but not many people I spoke to know who he is.

Anyway, what an amazing experience! This congregation was so welcoming and loving, and just on fire for the love of God. Growing up in the Evangelical tradition, where order and tradition are cherished, this provided quite a different experience. I loved worshiping with people who were so excited about the work of the Holy Spirit!

Now, let's stay on-topic here: music. Let's just say, their praise team is a little different than the 1-5-6-4 chord progression I'm used to. There was a 6-part vocal ensemble, a vocal leader, bass, keys, drums, electric guitar, and, of all things, a violin. Couldn't hear the violin too much, but everything else was astounding! Truly incredible musicianship, what looked to be free-form. Fascinating stuff, really.

It is quite amazing how God has given us so many ways to use music to glorify His name! Blessings, all.

If you don't find Salvation Is Here" challenging, then you are a better player than I am. I can play it, but it took a lot of work--probably as much as any song that I've ever learned.

Well, I'm off tomorrow to get the stuff to set up my wired IEM system for church. We've been taking a out it for a while - to use backing tracks, click, etc. - but today another reason presented itself. During sound check/rehearsal the monitors kept giving us trouble. Going in and out, my gain was dimed and I barely heard anything, etc. We think the amps are going and the monitors themselves sound pretty bad lately. We may have to upgrade the sound system before the new building gets done.

I am going wired as its cheaper and I don't move a lot. Rolls PM50 monitor amp, Yamaha EPH-50 ear buds and an extension cord for the buds. The whole thing will be under $150 so not bad.

Worked with a new drummer today. Great guy, a little drifty on the tempos. Felt like I was fighting with him all morning to keep him from running away, especially when he'd light off some double bass fills. Kind of exhausting. Other than that, was pretty good. I'm still trying to adjust to the in-ears. Felt like something was missing today, but was probably just missing from my IEM, lol.

Things went well and the songs are very easy. The only problem for me was remembering their structure. The musical director/pianist/organist uses this program called FlyWorship which makes following along fairly easy. My only problem was I couldn't hear the drums which are played on a backing track through the program.

Marvin Sapp is on my buy without preview list. Left over from the days before YouTube and snippets. Sapp's songs are in my personel woodshedding sets. One of our kids will play violin at times, the musician normally helps out translating. Normlly we would go with 3 or 4 singers.
