Glad to hear you survived the bugs. We still have no backup plan for the MD being out sick. I need to bring that up again.

I am going to use this as a learning tool. Thank you for all the effort in putting this together.

All the effort was somebody else's my friend. I got this from another thread on TalkBass last year when I was asked to learn that solo. Technically I really should find out the original posters' name and credit them.

but I'll take credit for posting it HERE... haha.

P.S. UPDATE - credit where credit is due.

(Looks sadly at 20-fret neck...)

Yeah it can be daunting... I usually practice my 16th notes for a few minutes before I jump into playing Salvation is Here. There's another song... "In The Mystery" where the bass line is in 16ths. during the verses (but much less complicated). I find if I play that first it sets me up really well for playing the Salvation is Here solo. You just need to get the pedalling rythym correct on the right hand and then it's easy. Plus, DO NOT try to play it at more than 100bpm if you're just learning it. Get a metronome out and slow it down until you've got the jist of the thing.

Hey guys, I need a little input. Have any of you ever been asked to play secular music for a service that you were not comfortable with? If so, how did you handle it?

Never really been in your situation dDaddybass, but here's how I would handle it...

First, I'd be sure of why I'm not comfortable with it. Is the song against what you believe as a Christian? Is it just not worshiping Jesus enough?

Second, I'd ask why they want to play the music for the service. There may be a reason for it such as a piece or two may go along with the messae and help make a point. It may not.

Third, I'd explain how I felt about the music and my reasons and see if there's a change of heart about the selection or further explanation.

From there I'd make my decision about whehter or not to play, if I don't play, being careful to make my decision is a respectful manner.

Not that I've been uncomfortable with. I've played songs where the lyrics have fitted a message perfectly. In some cases the original artists weren't particularly Godly but that goes equally for many church songwriters!

Downloaded all the Christmas music for this year's services celebrating the birth of our Lord. Surprisingly a couple of repeats from last year, including the "crown jewel" at least from a music/player perspective - Carol of the Bells. The WL actually added in a second TSO piece this year - Mad Russian's Christmas. Thankfully, we do have a lead guitar who can absolutely nail those..

Set List:
Children's Choir:
Angels We Have Heard on High
What Will You Do?
Emmanuel

Worship Team/Choir/Orchestra:
Mad Russian's Christmas
Joy to the World
A Night of Hope
Sound of the Round
God Coming Down (Love this one by Travis Cottrell)
For the Glory of the King
A Baby Changes Everything
He Came Down
Above All
Carol of the Bells

A ton of practice time is in my future.. :=)

All the secular stuff we've done, I've been fine with. As pre-worship we've done short instrumentals of:
Living On a Prayer , Bon Jovi
Where the Streets Have No Name, U2
Carry On My Wayward Son

During a message series on "dirty laundry" we did a short vamp of the Eagles tune as the pastor walked out.

Every year on Biker Sunday we often play some secular tunes, such as:
Simple Kind of Man - Skynrd
Free Ride
As well as Christian tunes, such as Free.

In all cases, I've felt that the material was appropriate or at least done in a tasteful and appropriate way.

I have not been in that situation but...

You don't have to do anything that violates your conscience. However, it's important that you don't judge the person suggesting the song when you tell them your aren't comfortable with it. Maybe suggest you sit out that week or something. And like someone else said, make sure you know why you aren't comfortable and be able to articulate it without judgment.

Like, "Part of my getting right with God involved secular music. It was part of my life that did not glorify God and I told Him I would glorify Him with my whole life. I feel this would violate my promise to God."

It's hard to argue against that and yet you are not telling the wl what to do.

I wouldn't want to go to a church that did this BUT I don't have anything against churches that play secular music. It's just not for me and I am comfortable with that.

I know my church won't ever do it but maybe we are missing out on something, who knows.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll keep praying about it. I know that I will not participate if the song is not dropped. I'm not trying to dictate to anyone, but I have to do what I feel in my heart is right.

I know some songs are just technically incorrect, like Eric Clapton's Tears From Heaven which is an absolutely beautiful song that was written out of deep pain but the Bible clearly says there will be no tears in heaven except those that God collects from us down here.

at my church recently we have played two different songs that had no lyrics and we used them as a sort of interlude (during greet each other time and during offering time). the first was "billy jean" Michael Jackson and "Low Rider" War? (i think) different weeks we did this. both were condensed versions and both were finished with a very loud reception of claps and woo hoos from the congregation. we usually don't get that sort of reaction after a song. it was a feeling that wow it was musically appreciated. instead of silence while we are done with a song. i wasnt sure if we should be playing these in our corporate setting but with no lyrics it was just looked at as a fun moment and the people seemed to lighten up a bit and relax for the message to come. it isn't something we do very often. just something to change things up a bit. we have also done this with "carry-on my way ward son????" Kansas and "Something" George Harrison and the Beatles.

Enter Sandman, Metallica. Yes, I'm serious. I was hoping not to get too deep into the explaination, but. The local college football team (VA tech) uses this song when the players come on to the field. Well, this Sunday is "Hokie fan Sunday" ? So, the WL wants to play the beginning of the song at the beginning of service.

The whole "Hokie fan Sunday" is where I would be drawing the line. Hokie fans aren't welcome any other time of the year?
