It seems like since every artist does a Christmas album by their third recording that there are many alternate chord progressions out there as many try to put their own special spin on the songs.

Speaking of which tomorrows setlist starts with You Are Good. My newly promoted worship leader likes to do it like Lincoln Brewster, although the guitarist loves to do it the way Israel & New Breed does it as our church had done for the decade I have been there. But to the point Lincoln Brewster did more then do it 4 half steps lower, it is a different progression of chords altogether.

the rest

2 I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever, I was fooling around with a bassline but the kid on piano didn't adjust. If our regular music director is back he would hear me and leave room, which is why we are probably pulling an old song out for the second week in a row.

3. Your Love Oh Lord

4. You Are The One

5. Awesome God, we normally do it like Donnie McClurkin, but a link to Michael W. Smith was sent, we will see

Yea. Our WL decided on the version. He will usually pick the "peppiest" version of a song, when there are many versions to choose from. We didn't have any charts for the version the WL picked, so our keyboard player (pro music teacher) wrote out an entire score, plus chord charts. Plus she scored out two other songs. Well known Christmas songs, but ah.. more peppy. Did it all in 2 days. Amazing musician!

WOW! I think the last time I logged in we were in part 16 or 18.
This has been a rough year for me and my playing. My wife and I decided to change churches (from the Lutheran church she grew up in to a local Baptist chuch (my up bringing was Baptist). I had basically stopped playing @ the Lutheran church, and didn't have another "gig". Around April, I was asked to fill in for the normal bassist @ the Baptist church, and it went very well... then my world fell apart.
After church on June 3rd, I got dizzy, went stiff as a board and fell back... whacked my head on the concrete, was sent to the hospital for a week, and I don't remember the first 3 or 4 days... Nobody is sure what actually happened. After 2 1/2 months, I went back to work. Then on October 22nd, I started noticing some double vision, and on the 24th pulled myself from work. After much testing etc, I have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). I have filled in once since the diagnosis, and am slated to play in the Christmas program (2 songs... Revelation by Third Day and Give Me Your Eyes by Brandon Heath... both great songs). With the double vision, I have to keep my music fairly close, but I STILL SOUND GOOD.

For our preparations that is true. So I must try to get the New Breed phrasing out of my mind and think Lincoln Brewster rock instead for today. To the congregation however the melody is the song. And it works for Christmas songs especially since an even greater percentage of the audience knows the melody and can nail it in their sleep..

The hip hop era started as I became an adult so for most of my life I have been exposed to different songs being sampled. mashed and mixed into other songs. During the internet era I have seen piano folio music, presumably direct from the original song writer, but sometimes simplified for easy piano, uploaded to chord sites and then watch all the comments on how the tab/chords are wrong. I just figure an artistic choice by one band/sideman in a studio recording just added a flavor which changed the nature of a chord from what the writer penned.

I ran into an interesting issue this morning, and it relates to the inconsistency mentioned a few pages back. But let's start with ludicrous first...

A while ago I was told "no amp" so politely informed them I'd remove the 'sinful beast' from worship and took my simple little 40W with bass proficient DI home. I get asked to sub for this morning and find a, no, it can't be, 60W Roland Cube with more effects in it than is worthwhile (think Jesse Reeves). Anyway, I'm a good boy and simply plug in - I touch nothing else!

The sound guy then walks up to me and takes my head off for turning the volume up. I also get accused of causing the "peak light" on the desk to come on. I politely, calmly, and brotherly inform him I did no such thing and simply plugged in. He then goes at me for my bass being far louder than it need be (the volume knob is hardly off zero!).

Sigh! How difficult it is to soar with eagles when surrounded by self-taught turkeys who know everything there is to know about sound (ok, I suppose it's time to stomp the sarcasm effects pedal to 'off').

This is one of those times that you calmly and brotherly unplug your bass, pack up and walk. ESPECIALLY if you are a volunteer.

I believe they sell Christian duct tape at Home Depot. It's silver just like the heathen kind, but it's specifically formulated for sound men.

That is because the Roland cubes are wimpy and their power ratings are BS. It easily passes as a 40w.

I believe I would confront the sound guys attitude if he truely took your head off. Peaceably of course. As brothers and sisters in Christ there is no reason for crapatudes. Last time I checked we are all on the same team and apparently they need a reminder.

+1000.

Thankfully we've got a good soundman for ours. Most of the people on the team I'm on do feel that everyone has something to contribute.

I'd have walked as well.

Sounds like that sound guy is a "king of his own little world" type of person.

I think I made my feelings clear a week or two ago. I'd be making his world one person smaller.

A great day of not playing today! Our scheduled bassist called in sick but the worship pastor knew I was going to be busy preparing for the afternoon so called the other available guy. All good, except he doesn't have a bass and the person who'd borrowed the church bass was away, so there was a last-minute dash to our house to borrow my bass. Given that he literally only had chance to plug in and check the level, it was great. The whole band played and sang amazingly. On a couple of occasions I thought an instrument was a little out of balance but the PA guy was on the ball and always got the mix right quickly. One of those mornings when I felt blessed to know and to get to play with these guys.

Then all back to our house for an afternoon of food, drink, fun, food, fellowship, food, presents and food. A really good time a d nice to relax together at a time of year when things can get crazy.

I should have added that the exchange was witnessed, amongst others, by the guy who's function is liaison between the music and sound teams. I've tried the "walk" approach before without success. I'm hanging tight this time and see what comes out - God is in ultimate control. If He wants the bass heard, He'll get the bass heard. Full stop.
