Although our music director is in Nigeria so we don't have the optimal band for the situation this week the set list is heavy on traditional, quartet gospel. On my part I just put flats on my bass, I will probably be on the P pickup. Another new song is being added, Andre Crouch, I guess the guitar will be adding those 9 and 13ths.

Maybe the 4-strings are good. I guess my bias is against that one bass cuz of the 8-strings. Not sure what Mark King played? Just know it was a Jaydee.

Playing tomorrow for the last time this year...

Sing To The King
Joyful
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Made Me Glad

In rehearsal the BL told me off for playing too many notes in Sing to the King - he said I sounded like John Entwhistle (not sure if that was a compliment or not?).

On Hark!, I get to mime, because the BL made a backing track for it (our keyboard player is still out recovering from breast cancer). He 'accidentally' left the bass track in it! I get to make up for it on Made Me Glad.

First time tomorrow with our new drummer, Becky, also - our old drummer had to take a job which involves working on Sundays, so he left. First lineup change in over a year.

Big Christmas concert Wednesday night with Brandon Heath - rehearsal today and tomorrow. Here's our set list:

Hark The Herald (original arrangement)
O Come All Ye Faithful (Third Day's version, Brandon Heath leading)
The Night Before Christmas (by BH, sung by BH)
Do You Hear? (North Point Church Version)
What Child is This? (original arrangement)
Winter Snow (Audrey Assad/Chris Tomlin version)
Christ is Come (Big Daddy Weave version)
Gloria (Mercy Me Version)

Should be a fun night. I'll be swinging my Reverend RL5 for the whole set, through a Tech21 Sansamp.

We did this one today. As a mostly fingerstyle player, it was a blast playing with a pick and a little dirt dialed in!

Ouch! Everyone at church and a few here (thanks!) had only compliments. They said we looked distinguished, but then at the cocoa and cookie reception afterwards they wanted us to take their orders ...

I'm just glad we aren't into the robe thing. Dressing up for a special program is fine, robes tend to be an every Sunday expectation once the church has paid for them!

Hope you all had a fine Sunday today. We had the Sunday off. The children's choir did the heavy lifting today. The WT consisted of one of our percussionists playing "bongos" (probably something else but I would not know the correct name) with one of our vocalists leading the singing of carols from the piano. I'd never seen her even sit at a piano before so it was a delightful surprise and her comments between songs were spot on too. It was a great service.

Ken

An awesome day of playing today. I was at church for 9 hours in total but left feeling full of life. Two services then clearing the stage for next Sunday and rehearsing the songs with the cast. It's the first time we've put the music and vocals together but it's sounding great. Okay, it was actually the first time we'd played the songs at all. And my first time playing bass sat down!

As part of the production we're playing:
Born Is The King
It Came Upon A Midnight Clear
O Come Immanuel
Away In A Manger/O Come Let Us Adore Him
Joy To The World (Unspeakable Joy)

O Come Immanuel was originally planned as an a capella piece but was a little hesitant so I quickly worked out an arrangement with the keys player and we managed to write something decent on the fly.

Something very odd happened during Born Is The King. We're playing it different to the very 'Mumford & Sons' original with a more funky feel. In the verses I found myself starting to pluck octaves quite hard, and then my thumb starting hitting the strings. I'm not sure what happened - it's not something I ever do - but I think this indie/rock guy discovered his inner funk. I promise to keep it under control though.

More pics from Intagramming church members (shouldn't they be WORSHIPPING?!) jeez... not sure how I feel about people taking pics of worship. The EBMM Stingray-5 ruled today though... just sayin. I love this bass.

Philosophically I'm conflicted about a lot of the "attractional" stuff we do, but if it brings folks to Christ, where do we draw the line? I'd like to throw the question out there for general discussion. Where do we all think the line should be drawn between what works and what is distracting and/or irreverent?

If there's a line, it's probably a wavy one. It shouldn't be a matter of 'or' but 'and'. Attract people to something real and help them to grow in their faith. The extremes of a closed club or a show equally miss the aim of the great commission. Our church mission statement is something like "bringing people to Jesus, equipping them to be fully devoted followers of Christ'.

By all means win some - and know who you're winning them for!

A wavy one indeed. I'm not for all the flash and show, just give the congregation music they can sing to. I'm sure there is a very fine line, somewhere, with little or no grey area in between. I'm not trying to start a Holy War, just stating my opinion. Please let us know your thoughts....... Ken, wish I had time to type tonight. I would go past "Distinguished" and go straight to "Stunning." You and your wife look fantastic. I hope I look that good at your age, and I'm not that far behind. It's kinda neat how we all have different backgrounds, yet are all pulled together with common interests, ie Bass and God.
Hope everyone had a good Sunday. Mine was kinda neat. My 17-year-old guitarist and 13-year-old drummer played with us today, and that was kinda special. It made me feel like I am a good dad and all is well with the world....
Alan
P.S. Can I have a number?

I was at a Nigerian, Liberian wedding reception last weekend more then half of the music danced to was Christian music. The sign outside of my church says that the celebration service starts at 10:30. My job, I see it as mine more then anyone else's as the bassist, is to get our attenders up and dancing in celebration. To dance as King David danced to steal a line from Fred Hammond

Now my wife comes from lets call it a more traditional church tradition, she was horrified when I joined the praise team and danced while I played, but then church elders would come up to us pat me on the back and tell me to keep it up

That wavy line is at a different point depending on the community, ethnic and denominational. Some draw a line at any instrumentation or public displays of enthusiasm. Others place certain instruments in higher esteem and only accept us, electric guitarist, bass and trap drummers because they must have live music and organist are not steeping up to play their pipe organs. The at the other end of the spectrum you have your "Holy Rollers" . Together we make up a kingdom I can reach, or attempt to those who would dance like King David while at the church down the street they sing from a hymnal with a conductor and no instrumental accompaniment, and they reach that part of the community.

There are so many churches and denominations in the US that I am not sure one has to draw a line. Every single choice you make attracts some and drives others away. I think that is why the Apostle Paul said that he was all things to all people so that he by all means might save some. A single church cannot be all things to all people but the multitude of churches that we have in the US can be, collectively. Unless they all copy each other too closely. If your church is looking for an unserved niche to attract to the kingdom of God then it is doing a good thing. Most likely there are other churches in your area that are attracting the others. It is another application of the principle that we are all members of the same body. We all do different things but we all serve the same God and Father of us all so we should celebrate our differences even while we cooperate in Christian unity.

It's been a while since I've posted, but I've been keeping up, despite being really busy.
I took a month sabbatical from playing, then came back wearing all sorts of hats, including leading on several songs. I've been swapping to electric for at least one of the songs from each service. Luckily one of the members stepped up while I was out and has been playing acoustic faithfully. This has allowed me to play BASS! Yay!
In addition to that, I volunteered to start working on the handouts for each week. (Some folks call them Worship Guides/Sermon Notes/Church Bulletin)
Been busy!
