I've actually decided I am not really overweight, I am just undertall. Checking the charts I need to grow about another 4.3 feet!

Amen, praisebass!!!
That's pretty funny Dan K!!!

For a technical question, what do you people like about the flatwounds? I've always used roundwounds, and have been using Markley SR-2000's for about 10 years in all my basses. I love their punch, sustain, brightness, and feel. Thanks for your input. May everyone's praising go well this weekend...

I love flats. I love the old skool tone and vibe. However, I almost never use them for worship, because that is not the sound and vibe most of our sets call for (think K-Love).

I like the smooth feel, warm tone and superior (IMO) mixability of flatwounds. However, I don't use flats all that much anymore. Now I'm using D'Addario Tapewounds, which are even further in the deep end. Smooth, low tension, warm and deep tone.

Are you considering flats? If so, make sure you keep a set of Dean Markleys on at least one bass. Flats take a lot of getting used to. They sound great and feel great, though. I've found they work really well in a church setting, too!

Good luck!

I just put flats on a couple of weeks ago. The team likes me best when we are doing bluesy quartet type stuff. And with the change in leadership i am suspecting we will head back in that direction from the Tomlin and Brewster based stuff that made up the majority of our sets during the last 5 years. I did notice on stage when I was trying to sustain an whole note, it decayed more so then it seemed when playing at home. So far my overall impression is that I prefer the feel and the sound

First of all.......have a blessed Christmas everyone!

Personally, I don't like them (flats) at all with the exception of using them on my NS Electric Upright. I haven't used them since the 80's! I almost always use the Fender Nickel Roundwound taperwound sets and D'Addarios Phos/Bronzes on my Tacoma Acoustic and those are roundwounds as well. So, I guess I'm not a one of THEM's!

Read this:
http://bassmusicianmagazine.com/2012...teven-gregory/

Adopting what Steve Gregory said was one of the defining moments in my musical life. Instead of getting wound up about the failings of others, I started concentrating on my failings (I assure you, there are still plenty of wrinkles in my musicianship, never mind the personality!). Suppose it's what could be called the "splinter and plank syndrome". I find I no longer get upset when others don't realize "it all comes together when everyone follows the bassist". I concentrate on bringing MY best. I've seen results; I've got three of the four drummers on rotation feeling elated when I play, because they know they're going to get clear direction of where things are going (dynamic wise); they know that if they lay down an appropriate groove, I'll lock in right along with them. They feel appreciated.

But the biggest result is I no longer get upset; in fact, I can laugh about it now (look at my post about "making it theirs" a few pages back). I've become very aware of the fact that the last thing I want is a clout on the back of the head because I was not doing my best; and the guy who would issue the clout is kinda big! He's so big that even His voice alone brought about all that you can see; yeah, that big!

Does it mean I don't suffer frustration? Of course not. I'm human. I'm subjected to sound guys who fall into both camps mentioned a few posts back; if they hear bass, it's too loud, yet the volume of the vocals has one's ears ringing well into mid-week! But I no longer let the frustration get to me, except to trigger me into practicing more so as to bring my excellence to the group. Do it long enough, and others will have no choice but to quietly follow.

God's richest blessings, and go out there and be a blessing to others this week.

Marc. <><

Pretty much a lost cause - I don't think I could make it to 10+ feet. I am eating my veggies to attack the problem from a different way.

On the required bass note, I am down to three basses! I am keeping a killer Sadowsky JJ-5, a Lakland 55-94 my wife bought me and a Warmoth Deluxe 5 fretless I put together. GAS is still an issue, though. My Ken Lawrence is back up for sale...

Two awesome days of worship music done. Friday night and Saturday morning completed. I used the Gretsch both days -- I rotate my basses -- and I seem to have broken through a minor barrier in my playing. These last two nights were A LOT more active, more interesting fills. On the faster, more swing-like songs, more arpeggios, and over all, more funk. I'm not sure what happened, but I guess I've reached the next plateau of skill? These last two days have felt very different freedom-wise.

It's nice step up another rung in the Jacob's Ladder of Bass Playing! I can remember a few times making an unknown leap in skills and just smiling knowing God has blessed you with more skills than when you started your worship ministry. It's good thing when You are a better piece of the puzzle where God has placed and uses you.
I am looking forward to a new opening door soon as my regular Thursday Night not-so Small Group worship opportunity has ended as the hosts have bought another larger home but have chosen to just go with a Friday night off shoot for married couples that now have 17+ couple attending. Most came from Thursday's Group. I have a wedding to play on December 30th that is just one Chris Tomlinson song, but that should be fun because I've brought a new guitarist in to do the fingerpicking that everyone I know has a hard time with. We are playing "Mighty is the Power of the Cross". So that should be good! The next thing the band is playing is an Art Festival at the end of January so it will be slim pickings for me for a while.

It's my second anniversary as a full time musician on the Victory Chapel Praise Team. To think I started so a kid wouldn't have to play alone while most of the other members were travelling during the season. Why did I wait those few years?

I hope all y'all's preparations for Christmas/Eve services are going well. We hit a small snag with ours thanks to lead vocal head cold, but we're getting together again tonight to lock in the chart changes to girl keys, lol.

We had a great morning with the youth guys leaving the worship. When the youth are involved people expect things to be louder, so we make sure they are. No keys, just acoustic, electric and bass guitars and drums, making a joyful noise and rocking hard. It was great to play with our bassist this morning (like me, another 'oldie' who helps out). He hasn't played for a few years until the occasional youth meeting recently and this was his first Sunday on stage in ages - I'm hoping the first of many as he's an awesome player. A real rock bassist: Gibson Thunderbird slung somewhere around his knees!

This evening was a bit stripped back as one of the other guitarists was ill and we didn't have the small PA rig setup in the foyer - there's no chance I'd have been heard over all the conversations. Instead, I played acoustic and sang four songs with a ten-person gospel choir - we generated some serious volume! Then the welcome chance to sit in the congregation with my family and belt out some carols (whilst paying attention to the bass lines coming from the tuba in the brass band). I'm now feeling suitably festive!

SVT, Brass bands rock. Don't ask why. I really want a vintage T'Bird, just don't want to pay for it. I've always admired the look. Never had a P or J. Played some, just never had the "I gotta have this" feel.
There is a special feeling in a big Gospel choir. People that haven't felt it just don't get it. A truly religious experience.....
Have a blessed Christmas across the pond. I'd love to met you when you are here, but don't think I can take time off work....

Just picked up an Ibanez ATK700 that I'm very excited about. Thought I would share my Christmas glee with the group.

I pray everyone has a blessed Christmas and a happy New Year.

Here is a scary thought: Our Worship Leader is out of town, so the pastor asked me to lead worship for our Christmas service. We're kind of doing things a little scaled down, so it's just me on acoustic, our percussionist and a special guest from the youth that'll be helping us out and singing "Silent Night" acapella.

"My Glorious" (acoustic-ified mellowed version of the Delirious? Song)
"O Holy Night"
"Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus"
"Silent Night"

Then I'm doing "Here I Am To Worship" while people are gathering the stuff to take Communion at the end of the sermon

Hey .... noise, what an awesome task!!! And HIATW acapella on acoustis bass? WOW!!
I got to play a funkified "Carol of The Bells" with my 2 kids tonight, kinda Trans-Siberian string people group. We rocked it. The MD also played electric and the KB gal is great. Pretty cool Christmas Eve worship.
BTW, what bass you got there? Sure looks sweet. Is it a real neck-through? Have a blessed Christmas everyone!!!
