Amen. It took years for me to find the church I'm currently a member of. I literally dreamed of a church like this for half my life... 'cause I'm a wierdo too, at least by the standards set by many of the "old guard" types.

I describe my current church as "The Island of Misfit Toys", I'd be you'd fit right in Joel. Don't give up the search... we may technically not need to be in church, but there is no substitute for a body of believers to fellowship with, and receive/provide encouragement to/from.

Same for me. I have attended 38 different churches (kept track) in my life. Not counting the ones my parents dragged me to when I was a kid. Just the ones I've chosen to visit. Never stayed with any one for long. Been with my current church for over 5 years. Longest I've ever been with one church. I told all of this to one of the worship team leaders. He said that was the kind of stuff he liked to hear. The way he explained it, most churches are churches of "exclusion". That is, they look for all the reasons why you should NOT be there. "Oh, you believe that?... then you should go to the other church down the street". Or... "If you don't act this way, you won't be happy here". The church I'm with now tries to be a church of "inclusion". That is, they look for the reasons that you SHOULD be with this church. They don't look for why you should NOT.

My comment was not to try to intimidate, but to get the job done BY bypassing the Board and FOH and letting those. Who think they are in control, think they are in control and let those that want to glorify and worship the Lord do so. God is in control! Just like the Rock we stand on we as bass players are called to be the foundation for the semi skillful noise we call Worship.

I have a similar story of a former church that is too big to effectively handle life and counseling more than 20,000 people a week. I now have found a sweet church that is alive and the Spirit glows there and it's just a whole other world spiritually. I didn't walk away, God moved me in a time of turmoil and drained all the junk from me that one pivotal night. I shan't look back. There is a reason why our windshield in our cars and trucks are so much bigger than our rear view mirrors. God shuts one door and opens another, don't just sit on the other side of the closed door. Get up and take your mat and be healed. Take some time to reflect on your part in that ordeal and don't focus on what others have done. Your relationship is with the Lord and Jesus wants a better, freer, non weird (Even though we are called to be peculiar people doesn't mean we should bask in it!) God loving, thunder bringing bass player for God. Don't be a Jonah. Remember God is everywhere so running from Him is actually running to Him. I think you have found a safe place here......WELCOME. we are here to listen just as you are!

I ended up leaving a church over "stuff" the senior pastor was doing also. I was VERY bitter over it for a couple of years and then realized that the only person I was harming was myself. I forgave him and then was able to move on. Although it is probably a trite idea, I now firmly believe that churches are perfect- it is just the people in them that have problems. And all of them do have problems. What matters is your relationship with Him.
