1) Thanks for the number! Glad to be part of the family.
2) Seconding on the non-winter winter Chicago is getting. Though we ARE getting the cold temps. Rumors of HIGHS of 12 degrees F on Monday?!?!? I'd rather have the snow, thanks!!!
3) Aspire to try fretless when I can afford one as I LOVE that tone. Agree that it's a "sometimes" thing though. I would think it would get buried in some of the louder rock pieces, yes?
4) Feeling good after a gathering our Worship Team had this evening. First in apparently over 2 years (!!!) (I've only been on the team a year), where the primary goal was fellowship and discussion about where we're at and where we're going as a team. We enjoyed a great meal together, shared some hilarious stories, and had some very fruitful discussion about some things we can implement and try. Very encouraging evening and I wouldn't be surprised if it gave our worship a little extra life in the morning.
Very thankful to be on a team that gets along so well, especially as diverse as we are. Ready for us to kick it up a notch.
Have a blessed Sunday, all.

It is a doorway to open up a conversation about what we do in church with people who are currently not a part of a faith community.

My friend plays guitar, as well. We had a bass player join us for a while and it was great having a full band play with us. That guy has moved on though and it has had me missing the bass in our worship.
So, in a couple hours, I will be leading worship with my bass for the first time! We play contemporary stuff and throw in some old hymns occasionally.. should be fun.
*edit
No club number necessary.
Keep up the good work, y'all!

I had a DeArmond Ashbory years ago, and it was a surprise to find that my intonation was pretty good with that tiny 18" scale.
Plus, a bass that small has enough novelty factor that people will cut you some slack if you're off a bit... |

It helps to have that mass choir behind you. In our praise team format some singers are too dependent upon the lead singer actually singing the melody and not acting as the leader at times.
The 2012 big winner in a more straight lead singer role: Vashawn Mitchell's Nobody Greater
When Kirk Franklin was awarded song of the year, for his gospel/pop song Smile his acceptance was to turn his trophy over to Mr. Mitchell

I started the morning playing snow shovel in the car park then had an easy ride as rhythm electric and MD. The whole band were on form and the congregation really came ready to sing.
Back on bass next week.

Swing Low Sweet Chariot
Since I Laid My Burden Down
Love Divine All Loves Excelling ( Hyfrodol version)
Venite (musical adaptation of Psalm 95)
Your Love O Lord
Beloved Child, Beloved Community (never heard of this one before this week, sung to the tune of Morning Has Broken)
Free At Last
We Shall Overcome
I Will Change Your Name
One Bread, One Body
All Of Heaven
Pride (In the Name of Love) (When the priest's away, the worship team will play )
10,000 Reasons
I'll Fly Away

It is a "position" I have held for about a decade actually. So if they are clear I will be standing outside testing a telescope mount on those delightfully cold nights. I will be wishing they were as warm as 12F!

We have a gym and we do an upward basketball ministry. It's a big deal for us. My three kids play and my wife and I are deeply involved. Yes, our band is flawed and the guy in the uniform playing bass is goofy looking (he's goofy looking when officiating as well) but we have a GOOD time! Glory! http://youtu.be/7T-4DfPDbCs

Its great for the kids and we get to see our friends from other churches as well as meet new friends who don't currently have a church home. I have two friends that are bass players in other churches who bring their kids and this is one of the few times we get to connect.

Really solid playing as well. I almost didn't use the word 'solid' as some flashier musicians might misinterpret it as 'boring', but what you're doing there is playing what's needed and playing it right on.

I've popped in now and then to this club, but I haven't contributed yet.
I play fretless at my church about 90% of the time and I wanted to respond to Sasred.
Getting burried or not depends on tone, mostly, and also on note register choice. In other words making sure you're playing in your tonal space. It's the same for fretted and fretless.
Fretless works for most songs, including faster rock genre songs. I've found that the trick is to minimize the mwah on the fast songs so that the notes have a good strong attack. I do this by playing closer to the bridge and keeping the 2 pickups balanced (instead of favoring the bridge pickup when I want mwah). I've played Everlasting God, Set Free, and similar songs in the same set as Revelation Song and Hungry (Falling on My Knees) and didn't have time to switch between fretted and fretless. The fretless works fine for both. If I have a set that doesn't have any songs for fretless sometimes I'll just play the fretted, but that is pretty rare. The only song that I've played that I think of as a fretted song is New Hallelujah because the hammer-on of the bass line doesn't come through as clearly on fretless.
I hope this helps your fretless decision. It really works great in a lot of the slow to medium speed songs. I say go for it.

I actually like the way that speaking the lyrics emphasizes the message. A pretty cool device, that I've never seen used in church.
Aside from his great voice and phrasing, one of the things I appreciate about Mitchell and the choirs I've seen him with, is that the presentation is so laid back and accessible. I listen to a lot of urban Gospel for the players and arrangements, but the production often seems over the top to my aging ears. |

Are any of you guys using compressors live, and if so, which ones are you using? I find that this kind of music tends to have sections with the full band playing, which abruptly turn to softer sections, then back to full-out sections again, and I have been having trouble staying at a consistent level in the mix live when that happens. I figure that a bit of compression should tighten up the live sound a bit?
