So Primus is reforming, however without Tim.
Jay Lane is coming back to Primus. Phil Lesh confirmed yesterday that Jay quit Furthur because he has the opportunity to drum for Primus.
From Phil's from by Phil Lesh himself:
"Well, well, well, you can’t never tell.
Yet again, the rumors and disinformation are flying thick and fast.
In clarification:
Over the past year, both Jill and I have come to know and love Jay for the great guy that he is.
At the end of our tour he rode back on Bob’s bus and informed Bob that he had an opportunity to play drums with Primus.
He and Bob discussed it, and they decided that the logical time to make the change would be after the birthday show. I only found out about this the day before the show; as their relationship goes back a long way, I told them both then that I support any decision they might make. I will miss Jay’s enthusiasm and ebullience; he’s a great guy to hang and play music with."
Primus was announced for Gathering Of The Vibes today. This will be interesting. Les and Tim had their creative differences, and Tim is doing the whole Puscifer thing with Maynard right now. I for one am excited, I love Jay's drumming and it'll be interesting to hear the original Primus drummer with Ler.
Les just stated in an interview like a few weeks ago Primus would only come back if it was in a new direction making new material etc. I'm looking forward to finally, a new Primus album and tour. |

| | | | Yeah, I mean they've toured with the 03/04 Tour De Fromage and Hallucino-Genetics, along with the Beat A Dead Horse tour. Last time I saw them was back in 08 at Outside Lands.
In Les's last interview, in London since he's on tour over in Europe now, he said, " if we do Primus again, it has to be different; it's got to be a next step. I'm not a big fan of going backward. That's been the glory of my career, getting to play with Buckhead, Tom Waites, Bernie Worrell and all these different people. These were all the steps forward for me being a musician, they might not be as lucrative for me as making a Primus record, but that's not what it's about for me. I'm only here for a certain amount of time; I want to do cool new things that keep opening new doors. Unless Primus wants to do something that opens a new door, I'm not interested in it. I don't want to do it for nostalgia purposes; it has to be something new."
New album finally, new material, etc; I'm just thankful for some Primus. It's been too long. |

I'm curious what "new direction" means for Primus. After all, they're the platypus of modern rock, so what the hell else can they do to be different/refreshing? |

anyone else think it won't be "right" without Tim?
The "Brain" Mantia albums just didn't ever work for me.
Jay Lane is a good drummer, but to me it's just not the real thing.
It's like Mitch Mitchell playing with the Beatles - a good player, but just not the same...
Nonetheless, I hope they dig into the deeper back catalog for some of the shows. If they do, Jay has his work cut out for him! Tim's parts can't be copped by just anyone.
Cheers,
Martin |

Cheers,
Martin | I really liked Brain, the Brown Album is great.
He also did a good job playing Tim's old songs live.
I like hearing another player's perspective on a song, I get that you like Tim better, but I don't agree with "not the real thing " comment.

imo, primus's failure was antipop, and it was because of bad songs, not brain.
jay lane was pretty cool with the frog brigade, i look forward to hearing him with primus. |

| | | | The Brown Album he was still using CT's, Rhinoplasty was the jazz bass era kinda. He's never really recorded anything using something other than a CT or an upright. He used a Rickenbacker for David Makalaster I off Purple Onion which was interesting to find out.
Antipop had some gems. Eclectic Electric is great, as is stuff like Dirty Drowning Man, Antipop, Natural Joe, etc. It was just extremely different compared to anything they've ever put out.
He's still never used that Anti-Matter Carl Thompson since Antipop. |

Anti-pop felt alot like their earlier stuff, but Animals Should Not Act Like People had a Punch Bowl level of tripyness, so I'm interested to see where they go from now | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
