Primus good bass Albums/Songs

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I've been listening to good bass bands like Chilis, Rage, Dream Theater etc and I wanted to get into Primus. What are their best albums and best bass songs to learn? I play alot of Rock/Funk so if you could tell me any slap riffs or groovy lines in particular that are not too impossible to play.

If I was to get one album by Primus, it would be their new best of album They Can't All Be Zingers. That's a really good collection of their best stuff. "Those Damn Blue Collar Tweekers" and "My Name Is Mud" are good easy places to start with Primus.

Sailing the Seas of Cheese is a must for any bass player. I don't care if you hate it, you still gotta own it.

Anti-pop is probably their second best album. Songs like Eclectic Electric and whatnot-they're just awesome. Also contains some damn fine bass playing.

The Brown Album is good one too, as is Pork Soda (Hamburger Train is something else). I think whatever Primus album you pick up you're going to get some pretty nifty bass playing. I don't love Les a whole lot (and I was extremely disappointed with the Hallucinogenics DVD) but those are some pretty decent albums. I feel you have to be "in the mood" to listen to Primus though.

Rhinoplasty.
Tbh, that's the best Primus album, probably because it's got the coolest versions of Bob's Party Time Lounge and Tommy the Cat.

The first time I heard about Primus, "Pork Soda" was their latest release and, moved by curiosity, I gave it a listening at a record store. Although the bassist impressed me, the songs almost made me puke. Of course, it was just a matter of time to get the feel, but anyway I just have "Suck On This" and "Sailing The Seas Of Cheese". That's enough for me (plus something else - See below) since I'm not a huge fan of Primus' concept, but I really like Les' playing. Examples of cool things to check: "American Life" from STSOC is an extremely cool and fun to play song (even cooler if you sing it as well), "Is It Luck?" from the same album boasts the most uncomprehensible (in terms of how it's supposed to be played) bass riff I've ever heard and the live version of "Tommy The Cat" from SOT is much better than the studio version (released later, BTW) from STSOC. Awesome bass solo there!

Another album I'd like to get is the one with a live recording of Les playing a solo that included "The Awakening". I heard an mp3 of that solo and liked it so much, but don't know in which work can be found. Any info is highly appreciated.

Pork Soda and Sailing the Seas of Cheese are both frickin' masterpieces, although I'd say all their albums are mandatory. Well, maybe not the Shi-- I mean Brown Album.

Les Claypool's solo album Purple Onion is up there amongst my favorite work by him.

+1, you can't go wrong with any of those. But I would also add Pork Soda to that list.

Anywhere you start, with the exception of The Brown Album, is going to be a good place to start. Primus is one of those bands you either love or hate. If you love it, you end up getting all the others (including the Brown Album). Then make sure you check out their cover albums. Misc. Debris and Rhinoplasty. Great covers. THEN check out the Fearless Flying Frog Brigade. Then check out Bucket of Bernie's Brains. Then check out Les Claypool's solo stuff. Then make sure you check out Oysterhead with Trey Anastasio from Phish and Stuart Copeland on drums. That should do it.

I was just thinking the same thing. Pork soda is by far their weirdest cd.

yeah sausage rules. defintely get that cd. It's called "riddles are abound tonight". and get any of the already mentioned primus albums. most if not all of those great guitar lines ler lalonde plays on early primus were written by Todd Huth (sausage guitar player). "girls for single men" is one of the coolest les claypool basslines.

Good idea, although I'll include all Les albums as well:

1. Pork Soda
2. Sailing the Seas of Cheese
3. Frizzle Fry
4. Suck on This
5. Frog Brigade - Purple Onion
6. Tales from the Punchbowl
7. Oysterhead - The Grand Pecking Order
8. Highball with the Devil
9. Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People
10. Misc. Debris
11. Of Whales and Woe
12. Sausage - Riddles Are Abound Tonight
13. Antipop
14. Rhinoplasty
15. C2B3 - Great Eyeball in the Sky
16. Brown Album

I do love Bob's Partytime Lounge and Over the Falls, so even his worst is still enjoyable.

Favorite tune would likely be Over the Electric Grapevine. I could listen to that song all god damn day and not get tired of it. So many memories...

Didn't include the live Frog Brigade albums since they are more official bootlegs than anything else, though I really do dig both of those.

Oh yeah and I still need to pick up Blind Illusion, that's some pre-Primus stuff right there.
