for his more funkier old school vibe check out Musicology and 3121. The classic from the 80's are 1999, Purple Rain, and Sign O The Times.

I'm not sure if he actually layed down the bass tracks on the albums, but he definately composed the lines.

He's played bass on ALL of his albums although not every entire song and is rumored to have played bass on albums by The Time, Vanity 6 and Sheila E's albums as well.

3121 sucks, Musicology is great, and all of his work in the 80's are excellent. Especially "the Work", where his bass line is the epitomy of funk.

He's just released a double CD "Ultimate" best of, which has been well edited. Prince can be patchy at times....

For some serious bass action, get ahold of the Black Album. 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton has a serious solo on it.

I liked it. I think the 16th note bass grooving on Get on the Boat is really good. I also liked some of the other tunes. If it was Prince playing the bass on Get on the Boat, i'm impressed.

Essential Prince disc (IMO)
  1. For you
  2. Prince
  3. Dirty Mind
  4. Controversy
  5. 1999
  6. The vault - Old friends 4 sale
  7. The Rainbow Children
  8. musicology

Prince plays all bass on 1-4 for sure. And, I believe most of 5

"Dirty Mind" and "Controversy" for minimalistic funk grooves.

"Sign o' the Times" and "Around the World in a Day" for his best songwriting IMO.

And "Parade" for the best bassline ever - "Kiss".

A song, as opposed to an album/disc- 'When you were mine'. Takes me back...

Technically, 1987, but it's a weird one. The record company released it in vinyl then pulled it shortly thereafter, for reasons that are a matter of some debate (you can find one account at http://www.renewal.org.au/scam/princeblackalbum.html, but I've also heard that it was deemed too "dirty" at the time). It lived on as a bootleg until it was re-released in 1994. Great stuff, and worth hunting down, IMO.

It was also rumored at the time that the Black Album had subliminal mesages on it and if the RECORD was played backwards, you would hear them. As I have the CD, I'll never find out
lol.
