Imao, it is Yes, and Chris Squire. His technique is really unique.
How about you ? | Your playing my tune, brother. Maybe literally....
It's gotta be Chris Squire. Notwithstanding the prodigious talents of the likes of Michael Rutherford, Pete Trewavas, Greg Lake, Tony Levin and the rest, Squire just stands head & shoulders above the rest.
And it's not just his technique, or his tone - both of which are outstanding. IMHO, it's his extraordinary compositional approach to the bass guitar, with his mastery of counterpoint.
Truly I am not worthy...
MM

Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, Dave Hope (of Kansas), Pete Trewavas, Tony Levin, John Glascock (of Jethro Tull). Can't discard any of those as brilliant prog bassists who influenced me.

I've always loved Rush but the older I get I appreciate Chris Squire maybe a little more.
Mike Rutherford is pretty awesome, try to pick out the bass line from Behind The Lines off Duke....
not sure of their names but the bass players from Spock's Beard and the Flower Kings are hot stuff too. |

| | | | In fact, I beleive that Rutherford used a very special tone... Check out Dancing With the Moonlit Knight, and you'll see that he first sounds like a compressed ric, but then the sound gets some kind of 'boingy'... |

Turner sings like a bird; 1st Tenor.
Nice British Prog Bass Tone; Used Ricks and T-Birds.
Acoustic and Orange Amps.
And yeah, I enjoy listening to top 10 1970's prog bassists listed in this thread, too.
And what about the fine list of bass players in Jethro Tull? ok..we love em all, which is why we love prog.
I don't have much knowledge of more contemporary prog bands , but OP wanted feedback on 70's prog bassists..so...I gave my 2 cents.. |

Squire is totally in a league of his own, one of the most creative and influential bassists ever, not just in Prog. |

| | | | Mike oldfield, besides of every other instrument he lays hands on is a fairly decent bass player in his own right, and mike Rutherford did some real good stuff, get 'em out by Friday is just nuts! And I'll chime in the praises of ray schulman, the three friends album is a must listen to for any proghead | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
