Okay, I know its not technically prog but when it comes to 70's technical, worked out music I always go for my Zappa collection. I know he used a few different bassists during the 70's but if you listen to something like "Waka/Jawaka" or "Roxy & Elsewhere" you get the same complexity of prog rock that you get from Yes or King Crimson. But as far as bassists from that era, hands down Squire is the man.

Squire is #1 for me too, followed by the usual suspects--Wetton, Lake, etc. (and I'm happy to say I saw most all of them in concert multiple times) but I'm really happy to see some of the others mentioned here--Gentle Giant, Flash, Strawbs, Wishbone Ash, etc. Man, it's all the music of my youth--takes me back.....

Dave Pegg with Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull excellent player. Of course Wetton, Levin, Lee, Squire, what about John Paul Jones? He is pretty progressive, guess it depends on the definition.

Mike Rutherford is pretty awesome, try to pick out the bass line from Behind The Lines off Duke....

not sure of their names but the bass players from Spock's Beard and the Flower Kings are hot stuff too.
Spock's Beard/Dave Meros The Flower Kings/Jonas Reingold. I gave a bump to Jonas earlier on this thread. Both are Outstanding players. Colin Edwin From Porcupine Tree also outstanding.

+1

The bass throughout "Joe's Garage" is some of the best bass work I've heard in my opinion.

For me, it's Geddy. Had the chops and tone, but grooved harder than just about anyone else being mentioned. There's just enough JPJ in his playing that, even when Rush are way out on the prog ledge, it never sounds cold or sterile.

And yeah, I enjoy listening to top 10 1970's prog bassists listed in this thread, too.

And what about the fine list of bass players in Jethro Tull? ok..we love em all, which is why we love prog.

I don't have much knowledge of more contemporary prog bands , but OP wanted feedback on 70's prog bassists..so...I gave my 2 cents..
In the more modern updates of classic groups I'd put Steve Bailey with Jethro Tull (I'm a bit biased since I play a Steve Bailey Jazz Bass). Or Kai Eckhardt with Gong (another biased opinion since I took bass lessons from him for a couple of months).

Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, and Andy West. Maybe The Dixie Dregs weren't strictly prog but Andy West is an absolute monster, no question.

Geddy Lee #1, after that it's:

Chris Squire - all the early Yes material.
Tony Levin - first heard him on Peter Gabriel's Security, love his other work.
John Wetton - killer bass riffing on King Crimson's Red album on the song 'Providence'
Nick Beggs - killer bass work on Steven Wilson's new Prog album The Raven That Refused to Sing, first track 'Luminol' had me hooked.

I am having a hard time believing in all these examples that nobody has mentioned the ever present "Hawkwind" and the bass playing of Lemmy......c'mon guys.....LMAO

I just could not help tossing this in.....

As a side note, Geddy, Chris Squire, and Pete Trewavas are 3 of my all time faves, my 3 favorite bands.
