Progressive Metal/Rock Bassists?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello again,

I've been listening to and playing progressive metal ever since I started on bass. I've so far played some Rush and Dream Theater, so I know about Geddy Lee, John Myung, and Cliff Burton(Thrash Metal Bassist I know, but his solos sound progressive). I was just wondering if there were any other bassists besides the three I mentioned that I could learn from?

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

Troy Tipton is an insane prog-metal bassist. He plays in the band Zero Hour with his brother on guitar.

He also has an instructional DVD/CD-Rom

There is a guy called Jonas Reingold from The Flower Kings. This band is from Sweden. He's an excellent musician. Check it out.

If u wanna learn the bass then u should learn it from the masters, paul mccartney, sting etc..

not noobs like myung, lepond etc.. all they can do is play the root really fast and follow the guitar note by note, people who cant write good music which these bassists cant dont got the imagination to play an instrument well either..

They can play but not play anything creative, there's far better bassists out there.

Myung and Lepond are classically trained musicians. They write a lot of the riffs for their bands. Maybe you're calling Petrucci and Michael Romeo noobs for following their bassists?

Petrucci, Myung, Lepond, Romeo can write and play worth a ****, because putting together a whole band with 4 different instruments(Drums, Keyboard, Bass, and Guitar) and 1 vocalist and making them sound good is not an easy thing to do.

As far as you calling them noobs, they could probrably smoke your ass at playing bass, as a matter of fact I'd like to see you play something better than what John Myung and Lepond can(I actually checked out some Symphony X basslines last night, they're pretty sweet.) Just because they play whats needed for the song to sound good doesn't mean thats the best they can play.

I've already learnt some Paul McCartney and some old rock stuff on bass, I just got tired of it and wanted to play something different.

So thanks all of you with actual advice for adding people to my list to learn from, huge thanks.

For Lilterier, keep in mind I like the music not just for the basslines, I like it because it sounds good to me. Also, if the rest of the band weren't going along with the bassist and he was playing by himself the same basslines you're dissing, you would probrably be like, "OMG, He's so good, he's so cool, I want to be just like him when I grow up(Which probrably isn't going to happen judging by the posts I've read by you)," and you would be on your knees sucking their balls the first chance you get.

Whenever I hear the word "prog", I think of wizard hats, long capes, and huge MOOG set-ups.
