Those isolated tracks from Moving Pictures are just awesome. The tone he gets with the Ric and Jazz are just perfect. The playing isnt bad either =P

Seems to be a little controversy as to whether this is really Geddy or not. I tend to think perhaps it is, and we're hearing the direct-to-board signal. Man, that tone. After decades of trying to get that tone with everything else under the sun, I am now a full-fledge Ric and Jazz freak.

I have to agree...I get it is like a religious issue, and I will grant each his own beliefs...but to me that is really not a very good bass tone at all, it is really nasally, harsh and thin. Its BASS, where is the beef? There is just nothing below 500khz in there at all. Heck, 1000khz. It is a nth-generation board feed maybe, but still, no umfh at all.

I am not trying to slam him, just warning people who think that is great tone that if you walk into a situation where YYZ isn't on the setlist (in other words 99.43% of all gigs), they are going to make you change your tone or get someone else.

Marcus, Jaco, Rainey, Jerry Jemmot, East, Hutcherson ....*thats* good bass tone. The 5,000 records those guys all played on across virtually every genre speak more about what a universally recognized good bass tone is like.

yeah, this is a religious issue for sure. I like old Rush well enough, and I have great respect for Geddy... but this recording sounds like caca to me...

You forgot to mention Diego Diegerson playing dead flatwounds on a precision.

(Diego Diegerson = James Jamerson)

Even though I love Jaco, I wouldnt say his tone is that deep. Nasally is a good word (which I LOVE). And, those other guys I dont like their tone...to each his own.

And, I have always had a similar tone (for over 23 years) and no one asked me to change it. Everyone usually gets excited because it cuts in the mix and if you are a good player, they hear it.

I didnt listen to the youtube versions, I actually have high quality MP3s and they dont sound like caca IMHO. It is Geddy playing, at least in the files I have, its got all the subtle nuances. If it isnt him, I want that guy to make me some $20's

Geddy is a great player, this particular tone subject doesn't bother me at all, he's legend and that should be enough.

What has long impressed me about Geddy Lee isn't his playing, per se - it's that he sings, plays and plays keyboards all at the same time - AND he has a generally recognizable sound on bass... but his playing, viewed in isolation, isn't on the same level as guys like Wooten, Garrison, Bailey, Willis, etc. But the combination of things he does makes him pretty well immortal, musically speaking (at least, to me). Hell, I can barely sing harmonies and play at the same time!

All this proves is that there are a certain amount of people who think that Geddy Lee is the best bassist alive, and that Rush fans are prone to more fanboy-ism than fans of most other bands.

Whereas most bass players hold Mr. Lee in a certain degree of respect, I don't think people who aren't crazy about Rush - or people who dislike Rush - would find this all that appetizing.

It is just a really hard for me to imagine "Respect" working with a tone like that. Or any Stones song, or any Stevie Wonder tune....etc. no matter how good the player.

There is an argument going on about what bass he is playing. I personally don't care. He inspired me to play bass because of his skill, not the bass he plays...
