I tend to think perhaps it is, and we're hearing the direct-to-board signal. Man, that tone. After decades of trying to get that tone with everything else under the sun, I am now a full-fledge Ric and Jazz freak. |

Its BASS, where is the beef? There is just nothing below 500khz in there at all. Heck, 1000khz. It is a nth-generation board feed maybe, but still, no umfh at all.
I am not trying to slam him, just warning people who think that is great tone that if you walk into a situation where YYZ isn't on the setlist (in other words 99.43% of all gigs), they are going to make you change your tone or get someone else.
Marcus, Jaco, Rainey, Jerry Jemmot, East, Hutcherson ....*thats* good bass tone. The 5,000 records those guys all played on across virtually every genre speak more about what a universally recognized good bass tone is like. |

Nasally is a good word (which I LOVE). And, those other guys I dont like their tone...to each his own.
And, I have always had a similar tone (for over 23 years) and no one asked me to change it. Everyone usually gets excited because it cuts in the mix and if you are a good player, they hear it.
I didnt listen to the youtube versions, I actually have high quality MP3s and they dont sound like caca IMHO. It is Geddy playing, at least in the files I have, its got all the subtle nuances. If it isnt him, I want that guy to make me some $20's

| | | | Geddy is a great player, this particular tone subject doesn't bother me at all, he's legend and that should be enough.

Hell, I can barely sing harmonies and play at the same time!

Whereas most bass players hold Mr. Lee in a certain degree of respect, I don't think people who aren't crazy about Rush - or people who dislike Rush - would find this all that appetizing. |

Or any Stones song, or any Stevie Wonder tune....etc. no matter how good the player. |

| | | There is an argument going on about what bass he is playing. I personally don't care. He inspired me to play bass because of his skill, not the bass he plays...
