I spoke with Jack last night after a Hot Tuna show in Cambridge, MA. I have seen him many times but until recently was more focused on Jorma than Jack as I am primarily a guitarist.
I told him that I play his signature Epiphone in 2 bands and he was super happy to hear that people are actually using his bass! He had plenty to say about the bass and how to get the best tone out of it.
I think he is the greatest bass player ever and a super nice guy. I will definitely be signing up for one of his classes at FPR.

He is very friendly and very into the fact that people are playing his bass. I definitely plan to take one of his classes at Jorma's camp. It just amazes me what a great player he is, the bass really takes on a different role than the usual holding the bottom down when in Jack Casady's hands. How he manages to play so many notes and not clutter up Jorma's complex playing is beyond me. The man is brilliant. If you've never seen Hot Tuna I highly recommend it !!

i loved jack casady in airplane but i was turned off of hot tuna when i got one of the albums from the library and every song was ruined by some mental pianist who thought that every key had to be hit in every song.

really...what album was that do you remember ? My favorite recordings are just Jack and Jorma although the latest addition to the band (Barry) fits in quite nicely imo.

He's so cool. I took his level 1 bass class twice at FPR, they were two of the most fun weekends I have ever spent in my life. Jorma is beyond cool in person too. FPR is just a slice of heaven. I've seen HT and Jorma solo literally dozens of times since the early '70's, my favorite band. I was actually shaking the first time I met him, I was so awed- at the start of the first class. And I used to work with famous celebrities for a living and dealt with them daily, in my previous career- I was still nervous as all get out at the orientation. But he's such a cool guy and great teacher he put everyone at ease right away. They both do. Spending an entire weekend around both of them (and the other instructors and the FPR staff who are all amazing and great people) is just beyond description (plus they did a concert Saturday night). I want to take one of Jorma's classes too, now that I'm playing guitar. Maybe this coming year. I love FPR.

To Number27: Check out their first acoustic record (with Will Scarlett on harmonica) and Burgers, as well as any of their other live acoustic records. And like guitarsark says, see them now with Barry Mitterhof, he's a great fit and amazing multi-talented musician.

Stupid question, what does FPR stand for? I would like to know more about it. Thanks

It is a play on words from the hillbilly phrase, "Hit's a fir piece yonder." Meaning it is a long distance away.

Jack's a genius and his bass is an underrated classic. Not sure I'd could ever go to FPR though. I'd feel like such a dolt next to the man.

Trust me, if I could do it, twice, you can too. I'm unsurpassed in the dolt department. They all make all the students feel like equals, no egos...magic.

If you haven't already, you really ought to check out his instructional video, "The Bass Guitar of Jack Casady." Best instructional vid out there, IMHO.

I took Jack's Master Class at FPR a few years back, it was a wonderful experience all around. The setting, the people and especially the food!
The focus was soloing. Our final was to take 8 bars of the solo in 'Mann's Fate' accompanied by Jack and Jorma in a performance for all the students. Priceless. That place is really a little slice of heaven. Go!
