So, the other day I was listening to one of these black gospel stations, and I heard a song right after the break....
The song absolutely blew me away! The bass was focusing on all the killer low notes, and the song had lots of fusion/smooth jazzy twists and turns....
The lyrics went something like "I am so happy"...and that's all I can remember...
But If anyone knows what song and/or artists this was...I would really like to know!
Of course, they didn't say who it was, because it was just intro/bumper music into the main sermon...
If it helps to identify it, the singer had somewhat of a high voice. Man, this was a great song! The bassist was REALLY good! |

| | | Well, I'm not black but I am a gospel bassist.
"So Happy Being Me" has been done by Angie Stone as well as Donald Lawrence (who has a high voice).
A version with a killer bassline was done by S.I.S. S.I.S "So Happy Being Me" feat Cherub Ruth - YouTube
Probably tons of other versions, though.
edit: Don't know if this is what you're looking for but it's all I can think of.

Maybe I was not clear. It is black gospel music I am talking about. Sung by a male singer with an alto or soprano range.
This song was very much in the urban smooth jazz style, but with many chord changes. it was, in a word..AWESOME.
This is a style of music I want to explore more. Having said that, I have zero interest in the white gospel sound, which is more like modern country without the twang. Like Shania Twain without the steel guitar.
I have been pouring over Andrew Gouche youtubes, hoping that it was something he had played on...because the bass playing was THAT good! |

Sort of like Martha Munizzi or Vicke Yohe. This particular song is more "Black Gospel" then half of the videos shown on GMC's "Uplifting Urban" as opposed to their "Uplifting Pop" show
where "urban" seems to mean the lead singer has dark skin.

I sense people are getting their hackles up about this?
I specified "Black" gospel in my question to differentiate it from the modern praise music created by mainly caucasian artists who are making music which is radically different from that of the gospel music of the afro-american community.
Sorry, but I am not into the music that was pioneered by people such as Amy grant. It's not my thing. I am looking to explore the realm of that gospel music performed by mostly african american artists. The two types of music have nothing in common except the subject of the lyrics. other then that, one takes it's influences from soul, jump, blues, smooth jazz and the other sounds like adult contemporary rock or modern country. Is that clear enough? |

Nope not clear. No mention of "male" singer.
