i wonder if his technique is just for show or if there is some reason for that

I've known Quintin for quite sometime ( early 90's ) and he's been using this technique since I've met him and as impressive as it is,his reason for playing this way was because he felt that playing the bass this way was less of a fatique factor as oppose to the conventional way i.e strap over the shoulder,especially when playing 5-6 sets a night as we were doing back then and mind you when I 1st saw him doing this he was playing an Alembic at that time which isn't a featherweight by any means,with that being said I've yet to see anybody else play and use this technique except Quintin
