From what I'm hearing, Dave Carpenter has passed away. This is a very sad day for any jazz fan that enjoyed Dave's playing. I'm trying to find details and I will post them once I do. |

RIP. | Yeah, you can tell by the sparse responses in this thread that he wasn't really well known unfortunately. Well atleast to the mainstream. Jazz fans know how great Dave was and sense how sad his passing is. |

His work with Alan Holdsworth was excellent, some nice stuff on YouTube for those who haven't had the pleasure of hearing Dave play.
man, he was a pretty young guy, too .... somewhere around 50 years old .... drag ..... |

I was lucky enough to study with Dave for a year and a half while I was at CalArts and look upon those times very fondly. Dave had a limitless and hard driving enthusiasm for music and for growing as a musician. He also had some funny stories and got me into gigs. I am truly shocked and saddened by this news. He will be missed by many...

I wish the best for his family.

Dave was one of the most respected bassists in L.A., and although I never met him, I was always blown away by his playing on both upright and electric. Only 48 years old....serves as an unfortunate testament to staying away from drugs.
At least he left a great recorded legacy behind. Anyone interested in his playing should check out the Lounge Art Ensemble with Peter Erskine and Bob Sheppard. |

I saw and heard him with the Allan Holdsworth Trio here in Germany some 5-6 years ago....absolutely fantastic!
What a world class player. |

I recorded some jazz trio off of PBS years ago because I thought the bass player was tearing it up. I later learned it was Dave Carpenter. I hate to see people die that young.
Isn't that David Bowie's keyboardist in the Lori Bell video?

Whether or not he was using at the time of his death, there is no doubt that all of that hard living must have taken a toll on him. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
