R.I.P. Gerard Smith of TV on the Radio

Sign in to disble this ad
TV on the Radio bassist Gerard Smith died today at the age of 34. Upon completion of their most recent album, Nine Types of Light, the band announced that Smith had been diagnosed with lung cancer and would be unable to join the band on their current tour.

I was a big fan of TVotR before Smith joined. His presence was evident from that time on, adding something special to their sound on both bass and keys.

I would not count myself as a TVOTR fan. But 34 is far too young.

Because of this news, I'm just listening to them for the first time.... What have I been missing???? This sounds really good! Dammit he was so young!

My condolences go out to family and friends and fans.

Its really terrible, I haven't heard the new album, but the new single sounds fantastic.

Never got the honor of seeing TVOTR live, but when I moved to Baltimore, first night in town, I ate dinner at a bar right next to Kyp, Tunde and Gerard. Never got the guts up to say thanks for the music, but it was still a thrill just to see them.

RIP

Dang...wasn't a huge fan, but always dug the TVOTR songs I heard: funky, adventurous, sophisticated vocals. Blessings to him, the band, friends & family.

That is absolutely terrible and yet the message here will be ignored by so many: SMOKING GIVES YOU LUNG CANCER. You can't play bass when you're dead.

I opened up for TV ON The Radio once and they were all smoking like fiends backstage.

There are large, really evil, multi- national corporations trying to trick young people into starting smoking so they can get a steady percentage of your income for your whole life.

I'm sorry if this comes across as judgmental or insensitive, I just get really offended seeing such a promising young life cut short by such a stupid and wasteful habit.

Now that is something.
I read this post about four hours after hearing of this band for the very first time and after having ordered an album by them...

Working "behind the scenes", I have some insight into their new record - it's really good and musically very interesting.

R.I.P. Gerard - your groove will be missed.
