Most of you wouldn't know who Orson Clarke is, but some of you definitely know of Rhonda Smith (who has played bass with Prince and Jeff Beck amongst others). When Rhonda was coming up in Montreal Orson was the guy who helped to steer her in the right direction where funk was concerned. He was, to many on the Montreal R&B scene, one of the
funkiest bass players around. Not only was Orson a talented musician, he was a walking encyclopedia of funk. Just last week he was showing me some pictures of him hanging out with guys such as Fred Wesley and Bernard Purdie (Orson toured with Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks) and I thought, "wow, I really should document all of his stories and write something". I learned a lot from talking to Orson and by watching him play over the years and I, along with many others, will miss him. Thanks, Mr. Funk.
