Racism in Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
i was looking at the comments for this marcus miller solo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZJdjixEtxQ
and i was extremely disappointed to find that there where a lot of very racist ones. I know this doesnt really belong in "bassists" but it was the most fitting i think.
But im really annoyed, bout this. In music Race makes no difference.

I'd like to know wot u guys think bout things like this. eg. the "all black guys can play bass" thing is slightly funny, not descriminative i think, but a lot of people judge a musician by race before they even here there music. even before they know wot instrument they play.

lol, i agree, youtube comenters are often full of Sh** , i was just rather shocked at the intolerence, i always expect when watching solos to find people sayin "oh hes got no talent, claypool owns." or "i can play better than that" but this kind of stuff is putting to shame wot society is meant to be by now.

To help you out, "Discrimination" is an act. "Stereotyping" is what that statement is. And the fact that ppl find it slightly funny maybe an issue as well. It maybe slightly funny to all but who its referring too. Nevertheless, there are countless racist remarks all over that site and others. Most from ppl trying to stir something up. However its unfortunate that there are some that are serious.

Currently I play in a band where Im the only black person and everyone else is white. The last gig, one of the first things I heard was, "Oh yeah, I know this band is gonna be grooving". The person was lookin at me when they said it. I just shook my head and thought, "it'd be funny if I sucked lol".

Well yeah, Youtube comments at their best. How they manage to gather so many nitwits on a single site is beyond me.
As for racial profiling of musicians, I have nothing against it. Black music is real, it isn't just a sight of mind.
Just the same, black people are generally more into the groove because well, they listened to black music from day 1.

yer, saying black white and other people are the same is bad also, there are differences, theyre not bad,. I find black people often have great rythm, this is not always the case but it is usually, but i think its to do with african music, somehow i think its natural now after so long. Indian musicians also take characteristicts of their heritage. (DNA Memory?) the wonders of how music lives through people i suppose.

I don't even read youtube user's comments anymore, most of them are from dimwitted teenagers with too much time on their hands.

And who cares about the color of the musician skin? As long as it's nice music that makes you feel good the rest doesn't matter.

One aspect of an unregulated site like Youtube is that many people freely say what they think. As messed up as the world is no one should be surprised that many people have messed up thoughts as well.

Jeez, I watched a whole bunch of different vids on Youtube but never ever read the comments on the vids before. F-bomb, N-bomb, what the heck is going on over there? I guess ignorance and hatred are unavoidable.

I've read enough of them to know that looking for intelligent comments on YouTube is akin to looking for diamonds in a public urinal.

Pathetic comments. Gotta love angry little twerps who will stay in the basement their whole life watching their proud mother clapping when they finish their "original" slap solo which resembles oh so much (just nowhere near as good) the ones of those very same black people on TV they despise so much (for their talent).

I think the thing about black people intrinsically having more groove and white people have more skill with melody is tripe. It's all about what music you're raised with, I think.

I was in a rock rand like that, and to break the ice, our lead singer goes, "You know we're gonna kill tonight. Look, our bass player's black." Everyone died laughing, and we did kill.
You know what's the most tragic thing? Rocco Priestia never knew he was white! Poor guy, just a grooving away, and all the time he's white. Sad when you think about it!

Alas, that Sir Dewdalot bloke is an idiot of the highest order. He started posting his ramblings on one of my videos and I did try to have a dialogue with him but gave up and deleted the posts.

Anyone who thinks the contrary can go see Jaco Pastorius playing The Chicken or Victor Wooten harmonizing Norwegian Wood.

Bottom line: if you work hard you'll have your **** together, the tone of your skin has no impact on the tone of your bass.

Or Jaco playing "Opus Pocus", or just about anything by Tower of Power.

But lets not hide the fact that it does exist and needs to stop.

I was in an all black band for a while, almost every gig they thought I was the guitar player.

A signed Smooth Jazz artist from Detroit (Windsor) wouldn't hire me and I quote "No one would take this seriously if I had a white bass player"

And I've seen what Woodchuck has said too many times.
They see a black guy and think that it's gonna be groovin automatically.

All black guys can't groove (perfect example- Barrack Obama, see that dance on Ellen??? OMG)
And white guys every now and then can groove a little.

Anyone see Frankiln Bridge on "The Next Greatest American Band"?? Those guys are slammin'!
