Ralphe Armstrong...

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi gang...I've been a "Ralphe Armstrong" fan since his early days of him playing with Jean-Luc Ponty. His "fretless and acoustic" bass playing is "jaw-dropping"! Any other Ralphe Armstrong fans out there,or any one seen him playing live? Thanx!

I really liked him on the Ponty album "Live." His playing was a huge inspiration at the time.

I remember seeing him with the second Mahavishnu Orchestra, with Narada Michael Walden on drums. They were a truly incredible rhythm section, and grooved harder then anyone I can remember. I think he was 17 or 18 the time too!

Mahavishnu released a double DVD a couple years back with the first disk capturing a 1974 show, great stuff for fans of the era and Ralph.

I saw him back in the day with Ponty. Wonderful player. Those Gibson basses with all those effects was never my idea of a good time, but the notes and groove were fabulous!

Thanks for the kool pics,Barkless. I never saw a "fretless" Gibson RD bass..until i saw a vid of Ralphe, playing with Luc-Ponty. Maybe Gibson custom made the necks for him.

I seem to recall him playing a fretless Precision with Mahavishu Orchestra, but can't remember what kind of amplification he used.

Ralphe was one of the great "underrated" bassists who was greatly appreciated among fusion bassists and listeners, who should have been more famous than he was. Jean-Luc Ponty's live album was the first time I ever heard him, or heard of him. I'd much rather listen to his playing than most of what's out there today.

I heard that he was very "disappointed" in and with weak Fender bass bridges, but loved their bass guitar. He said that Gibson had the better bridges,so he went with them.
