Ranking the best? This settles it!

Here's Jack Bruce's opinion, taken from IMDB (Internet Movie Database):

Asked whom he regards as the best bass players in pop and rock history: "If you're talking electric bass, it's very, very simple: James Jamerson, Paul McCartney, Jaco Pastorius, me."

No Ox???...Like a slap in the face to his fellow Brit.

Considering he eliminates anyone from after the '70s I'd say no, this doesn't settle it.

Self-image is an important ingredient of success - good for Jack. I think he's a great player - I don't know if I agree that he's one of the all-time best.

ha!

I never really liked Jaco and quite frankly, I make Jack Bruce look like a beginner. He's one of the most unimpressive bassist ever. So there, I can also be an a** just like Jack.

He's a legend in his own mind.

And although I agree that Paul, James, and Jaco are all greats (and waaaaaaaaaay above Jack Bruce's simplistic bass playing IMO), there are many other bass greats that leave Jack in the proverbial dust, such as Chris Squire and Geddy Lee.

All IMO of course.

I'd love to hear you play since I consider Bruce to be one of the most accomplished, versatile, and in demand bassists on the planet. While it is a bit unconventional for musicians to rank their peers due to not wanting to insult anyone...I find Bruces honesty refreshing, and his comments are nothing he hasn't said before...especially regarding Jamerson.

And Reggie of The Archies played a wicked bassline on "Sugar Sugar" despite the fact that Chuck Rainey has apparently falsely claimed credit for that one.

Entwistle was a bit huge on the ego scale himself. Mike Inez tells a story of meeting Entwistle in a bar early in Inez career. He went up to Entwistle (who was hammered), and said..."Nice to meet you Mr Entwistle...I think you're a great bass player", to which The Ox replied without missing a beat..."I'm the greatest ****ing bass player who ever lived" as he turned and abruptly walked out of the bar. Inez thought it was really "cool".

What's Jack Bruce think about the lemon pepper wings on the corner of Mastin Lake Road and Memorial Parkway? I mean, I like Jamerson and Macca as much as Jack does, but his opinion doesn't settle anything.

As the originator of this thread, I feel as though I need to jump in and clear some things up.
First of all, the quote wasn't dated. So, it's possible that he didn't mention anyone more recent because he said it in the 1980s, or even late 1970s.
I was being tongue-in-cheek when I said "this settles it", as I think the whole ranking thing is silly. I was also gently teasing Jack, who has no trouble laughing at himself (based on my reading of his biography, as well as following his career for the last 45 years).
I'll grant you that the Ox was more of an innovator in bass tone (helping to develop roundwound strings, etc.) and might have had faster hands. But, to me, Jack is musically much deeper than him, or anyone else mentioned, for that matter. Basic? BASIC? Listen to Cream's live "I'm So Glad", or his first couple of solo albums, or his work with Carla Bley, Tony Williams, Kip Hanrahan and many others. He's not kidding when he mentions Bach, Messiaen, Mingus, Ornette Coleman AND Jamerson as influences.
Just my opinion, though...

All it settles is who HE regards as the best electric bassist in pop and rock.
And we all have our differing opinions on the matter, as reflected in the infinite number of "best bassist" threads on TB.

Exactly. It's food for thought and fuel for discussion, with a little affectionate humor thrown in.

I've heard maybe half a dozen stories from people who have met John Entwistle, and every single one of them takes place "in a bar" where Entwistle "was hammered"!
