Man, I couldn't believe the news when I heard it before heading out to work this morning. Such a great talent. RIP, Ray.

Unhappy :-/

K, I'm bummed..... Time to go practice in honor of Ray, and time to throw on the Ray Brown Trio Live disc I have.

I heard this news at rehearsal this evening...
What a loss-
There is so much of his work to think about-
His series of "Some of My Best Friends are..."
shows how Ray took standards and made them so
fresh and pure-
I think he was the epitome of a classic style of playing the bass.
Condolences to all those close to him, the music world has lost a Giant.

The funny thing was that me and my wife took the week off from work to paint the living room and kitchen of our house. We have been real busy so I have not beeen online to much this week.
One of the cd's we were listening to while we were painting was Ray Brown and Jimmy Rowles The Duo sessions without nowing anything about his death untill now by reading this thread.
Freaky!
He lived a great musical life!
Wow! The Ox and Ray and if I'm not mistaken Rocco from TOP is really ill and not doing well.
Bad summer for bassplayers

Jazzbo!

That quote from Ray Brown was right on target.

He led a full life and went out peacefully. AND STILL TOURING! May he R.I.P.

The "King" of Swing

I never get emotional when a celebrity or an athlete passes; but this one is hard to take.
Anyone who plays blues, jazz, swing and even funk should listen to how Ray could drive a band. Talk about push and pull, using dynamics, supporting soloists and singers........it's all there! And he played fresh solos every time.

Oh yeah, his tone was unmatched.

It don't mean a thing if it aint got that swing...........
