LOL...

I thought Ray was pretty impressive, but again I only listened to him once. And that was liquid from napster. I also listen to 2 more of his songs, which also has the triplets thumbing and plucking thing he does. Well, it is repeated quite a bit.

In all honesty, as anyone who knows me can tell you, I can slap about 50 notes in about 10 seconds. (oooh, ahhhhh) Do you know what that does for the songs I play? Not a damn thing! To me, it's good for 3 things: warming up, excercising, and greasing teenagers in GC. That's it. On the Vans Warped Tour, I had a lot of young bassists asking me, "Why didn't you do the cool stuff you did in soundcheck?" When I tell them that it had nothing to do with the songs, they looked at me like I was crazy.

Cool

Even after reading your opinion Dann I still feel the same about Ray's ham fisted approach to bass. I am sure he is a great guy and all, but I just do not care for his music. Then again I really like Vic Wooten as a person and he is a great entertainer but his compositions lack power and emotion.

My perception of RR's bass playing is based on the little I have heard from him. Unfortunately, the little I have heard from him was comprised of wall- to-wall slapping. I don't mean to suggest that there's anything wrong with that, only that it is not suited to my taste. He's obviously talented, and I don't question anybody's personal character (I'm sure he's a good guy - most bassists are). I respect Dann's opinion, and that, in combination with the fact that I recognize RR's talent, is enough for me to give the man another listen. I don't write anybody off permanently.

Judging by what I'm seeing, most, not all, but most of the bassist behind us (younger) worships the slapmeisters. It's like having the world's fastest chihuahua, in the long run, what's it gonna do for you? I love slapping, but in the context of a song. I'm not really into the "dig this" type stuff. The irony of it all is: I'm great at it. I'd trade it all to be able to cop 'Trane's solo from Giant Steps, or Donna Lee. Yeah, yeah, I know, practice!!!!!
