I thought Ray was pretty impressive, but again I only listened to him once. And that was liquid from napster. I also listen to 2 more of his songs, which also has the triplets thumbing and plucking thing he does. Well, it is repeated quite a bit.

(oooh, ahhhhh) Do you know what that does for the songs I play? Not a damn thing! To me, it's good for 3 things: warming up, excercising, and greasing teenagers in GC. That's it. On the Vans Warped Tour, I had a lot of young bassists asking me, "Why didn't you do the cool stuff you did in soundcheck?" When I tell them that it had nothing to do with the songs, they looked at me like I was crazy.

I am sure he is a great guy and all, but I just do not care for his music. Then again I really like Vic Wooten as a person and he is a great entertainer but his compositions lack power and emotion.

Unfortunately, the little I have heard from him was comprised of wall- to-wall slapping. I don't mean to suggest that there's anything wrong with that, only that it is not suited to my taste. He's obviously talented, and I don't question anybody's personal character (I'm sure he's a good guy - most bassists are). I respect Dann's opinion, and that, in combination with the fact that I recognize RR's talent, is enough for me to give the man another listen. I don't write anybody off permanently. |

It's like having the world's fastest chihuahua, in the long run, what's it gonna do for you? I love slapping, but in the context of a song. I'm not really into the "dig this" type stuff. The irony of it all is: I'm great at it. I'd trade it all to be able to cop 'Trane's solo from Giant Steps, or Donna Lee. Yeah, yeah, I know, practice!!!!!
