Most underrated bassist ever, some gentle giant stuff is to wierd/original for a lot of people, but you can't deny rays chops and songwriting. Truly original. Give the " In a glass house" album a spinn for proof..
wicked tone as well, especially on the live in stockholm disc.
John Weathers is in great form in this 74 clip as well YouTube - Gentle Giant - The runaway \ Experience |

They all just did a fantastic job of playing for the song. They played tricky parts but still left room for everyone else. Ray sure is a fantastic bass player but its John that really does it for me! |

First band I ever saw that didn't have on stage amps. and, If I'm not mistaken, Shulman played a P-bass. At least that's what it looked like when I saw them at the Tower Theater in Philly in the before-time. Shulman was a monster rock bassist.

Some tracks on "Missing Piece" (1977) could be a Jazz Bass and some on "Civilian" sounds like it could be an Alembic or even an 8-string.
Usually brother Derek Shulman played the bass when Ray played violin. |

Better to listen than watch 'though, the band's (and especially) Derek's stage antics are sometimes a bit embarrassing. Not counting Weathers, he's always very entertaining to watch. |

| | | One of my all time favorite bands full of terrific musicians. I saw them live as a last minute replacement opening act for a Humble Pie concert back on the Octopus tour and had no idea who they were. Needless to say, I was hooked. Both Gentle Giant and Hunble Pie were great.
Some of the members currently have a band called Three Friends and Minnear and Ray Shulman are planning on a new project as well. The Gentle Giant Home Page |

The early albums seem a bit uneven in my opinion, but glass house is hands down their best IMHO.
Think Ray played a marshall at first and a peavey at the very end of their career, wonder what he used during the in a glass house period?
By the way get a copy ov the live dvds box from their homepage, some amazing shows. Alsotreat your ears to the vinyl rerelease of the aformentioned album. Everything is so overcompressed these days.. Gentle Giant Music / Alucard: Welcome |

A wonderfully eclectic marriage of the Shulman brothers' home-grown jazzy talents and Kerry's more academic classical background. Unlike so many other bands who "cross-fertilised" at this time (e.g., Soft Machine), they built their very own, slightly isolated musical world and just stayed there, once the lineup stabilised after Pugwash's arrival in the early '70s. They sound only like themselves. Grotesquely underappreciated. |

Some footage from back then shows they had minimal amps onstage. I understand Gary Green used an HH Musician 115 combo. I have an HH Musician 212 and its cool, but does not sound like Gentle Giant's bass lines when I play bass through it.
Amazing player though, like a dark version of Chris Squire. Totally justified using a pick.
