apparently, those guys prefer a bassist who plays fingerstyle and sling their bass low....you know, like cliff like trujillo. Not jason, les claypool or avery

It's not like they fired Jason because he played with a pick, Jason quit for personal reasons, and Rob is a monster player, way better than the others who auditioned IMO.

I wish David Ellefson got the gig...
The least that Rob could do is use Sadowskys.

None of the members of Metallica have a ****ing clue about bass or how bass should be played.

Ellefson doesn't use Sadowsky's either, and to me Rob is way better, David would be my second choice for shure.

I have a hard time listening to
Infectious Grooves and what Rob plays with metallica now and thinking it's the same bassist.

Not to take away from him at all, he;s still and always will be a great musician.

Aren't the two groups different styles?
It's great that he is so versatile.
Didn't he play differently with Suicidal Tendancies and Ozzy?

Rob is a monster. Any band would be lucky to have him, and he is a great showman too.

I know it's an old thread, but did Metallica even consider Ellefson to play bass for them?

This. (I think the poster was talking about the other 3 members, not Rob). They like fingerstyle players cause they're easier to bury in the mix. The albums Newsted played on were the only ones you could hear the bass worth a damn.

I heard that Lars Ulrich doesn't even have bass in his monitors. If that's true, that says a lot. Hell they should just quit pretending and hire a 3rd guitarist with a 7-string and chuck the bassist altogether.

Some of Cliff Burton's stuff is distinguishable, but no question Metallica is very guitar driven and burying a bass player would probably not affect them except on a song like "For Whom The Bell Tolls."

Sorry to answer old questions, but yes, Trujillo played for both Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves at the same time, and yes, it's unbelievable that it's the same guy. I feel like his sound with Suicidal was an adaptation of how Flea played on early RHCP albums (punk music with a slap bass line that somehow worked really well) and that the dude from Rage adapted Rob's style to their music. That's purely speculation on my part, though.
