Reccomend me some bassists/bands

Sign in to disble this ad
I am hoping my fellow bassists on talkbass can help me find some new bands and particularly new bassists to check out. I am not looking for new bassists, just ones who are new to my ears.

The kind of bands I am interested in at the moment are Stone Temple Pilots, RHCP, Janes Addiction, and Bad Brains...to name a few. I am into bands and players who are somewhat soulful and funky but yet are in somewhat heavy, grungey bands.

So...start the recommendations!

Drum and Bass stoner rock. I guess soulful would work, lots of groove, and some awesome fuzzed out tone. On top of that, the guy plays through 2 4x15's and 2 4x12's.

Yeah, I am familiar with OM. I prefer Sleep myself though.
Not really along the lines of what I'm looking for though.

Soulful, funky & heavy (maybe not so "grungey")-
Living Colour w/ Muzz Skillings
Screaming Headless Torsos w/ Fima Ephron

If you like RHCP-
311?
Gang Of Four?

Based on what you said that you are digging right now, I think you'd really enjoy the Minutemen and their bassist Mike Watt. Also check out fIREHOSE, which is (in case you don't know) the Minutemen rhythm section (Watt and George Hurley, an awesome drummer) with a different guitarist/vocalist

I should have guessed JimK would weigh in and say Muzz! I 2nd the motion!

I'll throw in Fishbone with John Norwood Fisher.

I've been on a huge Living Colour kick lately. Muzz was a powerhouse on Vivid and Time's Up and remains one of the underappreciated bassists of the last 20 years. I love Doug Wimbish, but Muzz just gave Living Colour that undeniable soul that they have been missing ever since his departure.

You might get into Chris Squire (Yes). You may want to start with Fragile (album). Check out "Heart of The Sunrise", "South Side of the Sky" and "Roundabout" on that release. It's not grunge but it will open doors musically.

Weapon Of Choice, very funky but never sold much so you can probably find them cheap at a used CD store.

Another vote for Living Colour, one of the best rock bands ever IMHO. Besides some of the best playing ever in a rock context, they had great lyrics that weren't the usual heavy rock cliché.

If you like RHCP, odds are you will dig Streetlight Manifesto.
Not sure what they're bassist's name is, but he's good.

I'm a big fan of a Norwegian band called Motorpsycho that get pretty heavy and grungy, but with a little poppy, spacy funkiness thrown in (and Bent Sæther is a badass bass player):

Try Rush, look for Geddy Lee, I'm sure he'll impress you, listen to the song YYZ and if you have the technique already, learn that song. Listen to his other songs as well...
