I recently discovered Jamiroquai and am totally blown away by Zender's bass lines. Since I'm a huge fan of classic rock/funk/pop bassists, I'm not familiar with bassists who came into prominence in the 90's and this century. I'm looking to discover more groovey bassists like Zender. Recommend me some!

Also check out some modern gospel (Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, etc.), Soulive, Lettuce, Screaming Headless Torsos, Outside, Big Cheese Allstars...

Paul Turner, Jamiroquai's current bassist is a monster. he nails all the SZ stuff and dose his own thing. |

JTQ is a good suggestion, by the way. Also check out Pino's work with D'Angelo and Erykah Badu. Pino's been around for a while but a lot of people rediscovered him in the 90s. Mike "Funky Ned" Neal from D.C. is another guy worth checking out (with Rare Essence and on Maxwell's "Urban Hang Suite" album). |

Back on topic......
Randy is killer, and even if he doesn't sound/play like SZ, he's worthy of some study anyway. As is Paul Turner. |

Not that I like him as much as an overall player, but yeah. I was kinda surprised to learn that Mr. Fyfe was the guy rocking all of the tracks I dig most.
He doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves, IMHO.
Plus, hard to sound bad on a Zon 5... |

I read he used P-basses(with flats?) and his warwick SS...was he with Trace back in the day? I have seen pix of him with M. Ronson using Ampeg gear recently..

I also recommend the late Bernard Edwards of Chic. He is the father of smooth disco-funk, IMO.
