Recommend me some bassists similar to Stuart Zender

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently discovered Jamiroquai and am totally blown away by Zender's bass lines. Since I'm a huge fan of classic rock/funk/pop bassists, I'm not familiar with bassists who came into prominence in the 90's and this century. I'm looking to discover more groovey bassists like Zender. Recommend me some!

I don't know of anyone from the last 15-20 years that I like as much as Zender.

Stuart Zender lists Mark King/Level 42 as an influence. Maybe check out Mark King. And other Zender influences...

Me'shell Ndegéocello, Andrew Levy (Brand New Heavies, played on Jamiroquai's first single), Randy Hope-Taylor (Incognito), Richard (Corduroy). Also check out some modern gospel (Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, etc.), Soulive, Lettuce, Screaming Headless Torsos, Outside, Big Cheese Allstars...

their band's aren't all that similar, but i think P-Nut from 311 has a similar style.

Paul Turner, Jamiroquai's current bassist is a monster. he nails all the SZ stuff and dose his own thing.

All these guys are definitely worth checking out but with the exception of Randy Hope-Taylor and Andrew Levy none of these are very Zender-esqe . You might want to check out the Jame Taylor Quartet though.

You're right, but I took the OP's request for "more groovy bassists like Zender" to mean groovy players from the 90s and 2000s who fit into a similar vibe, not guys who necessarily play like Zender. JTQ is a good suggestion, by the way. Also check out Pino's work with D'Angelo and Erykah Badu. Pino's been around for a while but a lot of people rediscovered him in the 90s. Mike "Funky Ned" Neal from D.C. is another guy worth checking out (with Rare Essence and on Maxwell's "Urban Hang Suite" album).

OT..... but Maysa and Jocelyn put such a stamp on the stuff they've done with Incognito, that anyone else singing just doesn't sound right..... no matter who it is, or how good they are.

Back on topic......
Randy is killer, and even if he doesn't sound/play like SZ, he's worthy of some study anyway. As is Paul Turner.

As much as I love Stu, my fave Jam. tunes are with Nick on bass. Not that I like him as much as an overall player, but yeah. I was kinda surprised to learn that Mr. Fyfe was the guy rocking all of the tracks I dig most.

He doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves, IMHO.

Plus, hard to sound bad on a Zon 5...

Funny..I was just reading some old posts on Mr. Zender as I have been learning some old Jamiroquai tunes...really love his tone in general...does anyone know definitively what gear he used to record travelling without moving? I read he used P-basses(with flats?) and his warwick SS...was he with Trace back in the day? I have seen pix of him with M. Ronson using Ampeg gear recently..

+100!

I also recommend the late Bernard Edwards of Chic. He is the father of smooth disco-funk, IMO.
