Recommend me some solos to learn

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

I need to transcribe some bass solos and I don't have any in my collection. I need to transcribe some non-Cliff Burton/Billy Sheehan stuff. They need to be electric bass solos and preferably not 210bpm insane jazz fusion. Does anyone have anything they suggest or recommend?

Thanks.

worthy solos

Having only been recently pointed in his direction- most things Jamerson played were effectively solos and more than worth learning (IMHO).

YYZ, the solo part from Freewill (all Rush, if you didn't know).

Not exactly solos, but might as well be like lonegroover said.

The aeroplane one by the chillis or the intro to N.I.B by sabbath. They are both easy enough but pretty fun to play.

Learn some Bird solos... that'll keep you busy for a while, plus they are pretty uptempo, BPM-wise.

yeah... good stuff to transcribe, but I just realized that it wasn't what he was looking for:

As for a good bass solo to transcribe that is very musical, try JPJ's solo on Lemon Song.

Don't limit yourself to "bass solo's". There are many non-bass solos you can transcribe that will translate very well to the bass. Keep an open mind. Speaking of Zepplin, one non-bass solo that comes to mind is the keyboard solo from All Of My Love. I frequently quote this in my bass solo's and it always gets a reaction. Check it out.

It's easy and about as perfect as a bass solo can be. Short, melodic, and well developed. Granted, I distain bass solos as a general rule and I love this one.

There are plenty of Bird tunes at moderate tempo, and I think the omnibook actually over-represents these examples because of their accessibility. Most of them have a couple 16th-note runs, but you can always skip over these. Learning solos out of the omnibook really helped my technique take off. Once you get one down, try taking it up by 2 bpm every time you practice.

Yes, get the Omnibook. This book will open you up to a whole new world.

I'm learning the solo from Rush's "Freewill". I doubt that I'll ever be in a situation that I'll ever need to play it, but it gives me some dexterity practice and it's a fun little piece.

Check out some of Jimmy Haslip's stuff with the Yellowjackets. He's got an excellent sense of phrasing, and if you pick a ballad off of one of the earlier albums (Shades, maybe), it probably wouldn't be too hard to transcribe.

Also, consider a solo by Steve Swallow, who is a lot more about quality than quantity.
