Recommendations on Bass Soloists and Jazz

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello,

Currently I am pretty much a punker and only listen to Punk/Ska and would like to get into some Jazz aswell as hearing some Bassists who do solo work. I'd appreciate it if anyone can recommend people that fit into this category. I'm thinking of looking for stuff that doesnt have vocals, is Slap/Funk the best to listen to? The only stuff I have heard is by Flea and old Jamiroquai stuff (Emergency on Planet Earth) which i enjoy.

Thanks in advance,
squirrel

Marcus Miller is the MAN!!!!
He has great tone, and you can hear that he´s got tons of attitude. Stay away from the records with David Sanborn. Get M2, Ozell tapes and The man with the horn.

I think MM is bordering the R&B/Funk genre, though he does play jazz.

Depends on what you mean by "jazz" and "solo" bassists.

For "Classic" or "Traditional" jazz guys I think it's hard to beat Ray Brown, Ron Carter, people like that. Both have tones of recordings with all kinds of people. They play walking parts and solo.

There are also "Solo" bass players that have been mentioned. They play without accompaniment, or maybe with a loop pedal, something like that.

I wouldn't necessarily classify Marcus Miller in the same catagory as Ray Brown. Apples and oranges to me. There are also "contemporary" or "smooth jazz" guys like Jimmy Haslip who is a killer player, soloist, etc.

Great bassists who play with other musicians but have "solos"...

Heck, I'm lazy, just look at my influences.

Matthew Garrison. Smokin' in group settings with others such as Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, and Steve Coleman. Amazing as a soloist, too.

Jaco Pastorius, Jonas Hellborg, Steve Lawson, Michael Manring. These could be some good places to start.

Have a listen to the mp3's on Steve's site www.stevelawson.net and if you hadn't noticed he has his own forum here with Michael Manring and they are both super helpful.

Enjoy

Do a search for Todd Johnson (http://www.toddjohnsonmusic.com/).

He's a great six string soloist. (And a top notch instructor as well.) Todd uses a looper and MIDI pickup to do walking lines, solos and keys at the same time.

HIGHLY recommend seeing him live. Also check out his CD with Kristin Korb.

Hmm i also enjoy deep banana blackouts live cds! But its not really trad. jazz. A really nice way to search this stuff out is go to amazon.com and do a search on any of the people listed above then see what people that bought that cd bought. Also ya can listen to tid bits of songs from the cds. John Scofield is another player that always gets great bassist!
