I discovered Reed Mathis after reading the favorite bass sound thread and wow. This guy is an amazing player. There is a whole show of theirs on youtube and he switches from Acoustic bass guitar to electric bass to a cello strapped on like a guitar. He uses effects on all of them and is great. He grooves and he plays excellent melodic runs. Ive never heard about him to much but he definetly is one of the best modern bassists. |

He is also a really nice guy, say hi if you ever see them live. |

| | | | I discovered the JFJO on archive.org and Reed warped my fragile little mind. I prefer when he holds down the low end to his Whammy/Wah stuff, but he's the reason I even considered a Whammy.
He used to have a song posted to his myspace page - a duet with Rodney Holmes (also of the Steve Kimock band) - it was the first time they ever played together and they just go absolutely insane. He took it down, I asked about it, and he reposted it for me (set to allow downloads) for another couple of days. It stays on my Ipod at all times. Very very nice guy.
oh - if you can, check out some of the Mingus tunes that JFJO does (particular "Boogie Stop Shuffle" - live on Archive.org but not on any albums, and "Fables of Faubus" on the album "The Sameness of Difference").
But as I said in the Favorite Tone thread, my true love is their 2000 album "Self is Gone" - it's been in constant rotation in my car CD player for almost two years now.

There is a live show from Yoshi's on Comcast Digital Cable at the moment, and Reed Mathis does get his fretted Fender Jazz to sound almost like an upright, partially by palm muting and playing with his thumb. But I'm wondering if he uses flats. Does anyone know?

I, for one, am not terribly psyched about it, but i suppose you gotta do what you gotta do |

Gets a pretty old school tone out of them. Amazing player-does it all really. He's one of my current faves. Never seems to play a bad idea-always hip choices. |

I JFJO isn't the same either...Brian's the only one left from my fave lineup: the trio w/ Jason Smart, Reed and Brian. Jason probably my favorite drummer. |

Although i suppose that can get old after a while--a nice little jam band is always a good palette cleanser after some deep music... | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
