Reed Mathis' gear

Sign in to disble this ad
I saw a video on Youtube of "Cortez the Killer" with Grace Potter, Steve Kimock, Joe Satriani and some others. Reed Mathis was playing bass. I saw him once with Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, but his style and tone on this video was totally different from the sound he was getting with JFJO, and on this video his tone was KILLER. Anybody know what amp/cab etc he uses to get this killer tone?

I would think his tone comes primarily from his hands and his mind but in that particular video it looks like there might be an ampeg amp in use.
He was playing a Fender Jazz Bass and using Aguilar amplication (not sure what model specifically) when I saw him play almost a year ago. Great tone, playing and energy.
I had the privilidge of meeting Reed in a great venue due to us opening for the the openers he was playing w/ Tea Leaf Green. He was a very nice guy; I recall him mentioning that Winterwood was his favorite JFJO album.
Hope that helps.

assuming you are talking about this video:
YouTube - Grace Potter and Joe Satriani cover Cortez the Killer
i don't see any aggie stuff on stage, just backlined ampeg and swr. i agree w/ Tandrew... Reid's gear is Jazz bass in to an amp, but the sound really comes from his hands.

Reid use to make full use of effects, especially a whammy pedal w/ JFJO. i worked w/ Marco Benevento a few times and he was saying that Reid really got away from effects recently. I haven't seen him since the last tour he did w/ JFJO, where he spent most of the show playing a heavily effected les paul guitar.

That's a lineup to make your head spin.

Mr. 80s Uber-Shred

The drummer from Jane's Addiction

A guitarist from a Grateful Dead farm team band

a dirty hippie bass player

The guy who played trumpet on Snoop Dog and Tupac Shakur records.

and a blues singer from Vermont.

I think that ten or fifteen years ago, nobody would have expected this sort of diversity on one stage.

Location Ankh-Morpork??? DOOOOOOD!!! *manly biker bearhug*

As much shredding as was occuring on that stage, for me at least, Grace Potter stole the show.

I've seen shots of Reed using backline ampeg stuff. I've seen shots of him using an Eden rig. I conversed with him on Myspace 3 or 4 years back and I know that for the JFJO album "Self is Gone" he was using an old Acoustic rig (including a 1x18 inward firing driver and whatnot) - that album has a lot of "fuzz channel on the Acoustic 360 + a wah pedal." He started working the wah+Whammy shortly after that.

I missed it - post Acoustic 370, Reed was using Ashdown. That was from an interview around 2002.
