Rex Brown+Down - Down:NOLA remastered?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've heard/read rumors that Down was going to release their initial (and arguably best) album "NOLA" with Rex re-recording the bass tracks.

I haven't seen it for sale anywhere, so just seeing if anyone has heard the word 'round the campfire if this was true or not?

The next record my band does, every record he's on is coming with me to give to the guys who are doing the mixing/mastering... with the levels bumped a bit, of course! I think he is mixed very well on the past 2 records, actually.

I thought they were re-doing Down II as well.

I heard it as he was going to actually re-record the NOLA album, taking that as re-writing the lines, but had only heard they were going to remaster and remix Down:II.

Maybe/hopefully both are true?

I thought Todd did a good job on NOLA for someone who wasn't primarily a musician. I certainly can't see Rex adding anything to the record by messing with it.

No I agree, I just had read it this way.

That was my only thought about actually re-recording the bass lines.

Here's the link, so maybe I'm just reading it wrong?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_(band)

Down preceded the album by touring with Heaven and Hell and Megadeth, and supported the album performing on a headlining tour starting at the end of September 2007.[9] There are several speculations that Down may be re-releasing NOLA with Brown on bass, as well as possibly remastering the album along with Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow in 2008.[10]
To me that says Rex is going to re-record the lines on NOLA, and both will be remastered.

I actually prefer Todd's playing with Down to Rex's. Rex has a tone that's just too grindy and bright, and his playing is a bit too precise. Todd had a better tone and feel for that band, and certainly a bigger stage presence...

Down should work on a new record, not re-work an old record that's only three albums back.

Haha, everything you said is why I love Rex so much in a rock/metal setting!

They're already working on Down:IV it seems, if they're shooting for a 2009 release.

I'm a big Rex fan but going back and re-recording someone's tracks just seems, wrong. Remix / remaster, yes.

Dude is the man. He's become a genius in the studio aside from his monsterous stage presence and glove-like fit in the mix. Not to mention the badass fills and lines he plays.

Agreed. Leave the past alone, guys. Remember what Lucas and Spielberg did to Star Wars and E.T.?

Yeah, he's a master bassist, but someone else's lines is a diferent story.

+1

Do they have a beef with Todd or something? Did Sharon Osbourne join Down? Unless Sid Vicious is in your band, I see no reason to rerecord an instrument. And I have nothing against Rex.

How did Todd have a better tone? You can barely even hear him on NOLA... WAIT thats Kirk actually playing.

Todd was just some massive fat guy, who cares about him. I saw Down live and Rex has a huge stage appearance, hes awesome.

Dude... Todd had a massive tone and groove. I'm from New Orleans, and I've seen Todd Strange with Crowbar, and he just killed.

Maybe his tone doesn't stick out so much on NOLA (I don't think Kirk played bass on that, anyway), but to go back and re-record his stuff is incredibly lame.

I think Rex has a bette tone via his Spector basses but I really don't think they need to touch the record. As a band they should be looking forward, not backwards. Is Eddie Van Halen producing the NOLA remasters?

Nope, Kirk did play on Nola... sorry ain't got the proof but if you dig around on the Down forums or look up some old interviews you'll find that its true!

Clearly you have some awkward pent up feelings for Todd Strange, but for the simple fact he was part of Down and Crowbar makes him awesome.

I don't understand why they would do that. Todd and Kirk played in Crowbar together for a long time, and Todd always seemed more than capable to me.
