Question Rex Brown's tone on Pantera's "Far Beyond Driven"

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been trying to get this tone for quite awhile. I'm running a bass with the same active sytem and pickups into the same amp and its not working out that well for me. I'm coming very close but just not getting there. Any tips? I'm thinking it might be re-amped.

You are comparing the sound of a live rig to a recording?

There are many factors involved in a recordig that will make it sound a little different to even the same rig used for the recording.

Compression, effects, channel combining (DI+ Amp) , etc etc

I used to use a Korean Spector bass and could get a very similar tone through my Ashdown ABM.
The key was to pick the bass hard, near the neck ( if it's hanging as low as Rex's, you'll have little choice! ), boost the bass and treble on the bass and bring the gain up enough to get that 'choking' effect on the attack. Hard to describe, it sounds as if the bass is clearing it's throat, but in a good way.
My Spector has sadly moved on but it's still one of my favourite bass sounds, probably the ultimate metal tone IMHO.
