I'm very, very interested to see which direction this thread goes, but what's the general opinion of Richard Hell? Kicked out of Television for being a bit crap, he formed the Voidoids and recorded Blank Generation in '77.
I would not go so far as to say it was a "seminal" NY punk album, but it has its strengths, and more than a few stand-out moments (the guitar intro to the title track, for example) - but how could he even compete with Marquee Moon, released the same year or even, to a lesser extent, the album 77 by Talking Heads.
As for Hell's playing: I find it a bit sloppy, even by punk standards. However, like The Strokes' first album, I keep coming back to it and actually finding it quite listenable.
Opinions...

Richard is sloppy and a bit crap, but he had something to say, and I find his bass, vocals and songwriting intoxicating. Quine is a genius, Julien played with The Foundations, and Marc Bell is Marky Ramone! I really love the Voidoids.

It's sad too, since they were best friends from a small town, and supposedly it was the two of them that had a massive impact on the early punk scene despite the fact that neither had a record out until the initial wave of punk was waning... Lots of good info in the book Please Kill Me.
Personally I like Richard Hell; his songs were off the wall and they allowed for some truly stellar guitar solos.
