I received one of my most inspiring compliments from Mr. Patterson.
I was playing a lounge gig at Foxwoods casino. Richard was at the casino playing with Boz Scaggs.
Anyway, I saw this gentlemen in the bar Checking out the band and particularly my Bass playing.
When we took a break he came over and introduced himself and was so complimentary of my playing I was embarrassed . I mean here's a guy who played with Miles propping me like I'm the baddest cat on the planet.
To make a long story a little longer, He was a really nice man and I would have liked to chatted with him some more, But My family was visiting and I wanted to hang with them for a few before we had to start again.

And the thing is all the guys that I have named have national and international credits, both touring and recording. And there is a entire scene of young gospel and R&B/Neo soul players who are killing as well as some more jazz orientated guy's who are really playing some great stuff. The funny thing about Chicago is that for me even after 20+ yrs on the set I still meet new people or guys I have never met but heard of every year( mike, I'm sure that we have met at some time or another,we know many of the same people)

Man is he playing on top of the beat in that clip. I didn't dig that AT ALL. I thought he sucked the groove out of that great tune, which had a VERY behind the beat Marcus Miller on the original recording (I think it was Marcus.. it's been a long time since I heard that disc). Great chops obviously, but it just made me tense listening to it.

Those Sanborn tunes need some 'space between the notes' to breath a bit IMO. Not much space in that clip!

He sure is an amazing player though. Just didn't like that particulary approach to that particular tune. It kind of reminds me of Tommy Kennedy playing 'The Chicken'. Amazing, but....

This falls under my rule of only criticizing and critiquing players WAY better than me, as a listener more than a peer. I'm sure Tommy and Richard are not going to lose any sleep over what I think of their grooves. I've had Tommy Kennedy in the audience at quite a few of my gigs over the years, and thank god, he was nice enough to not say anything

i bet sanborn said something stupid like "have you guys checked out this 'drum and bass' music? it's like fast funk!" and the band did their best to make the most out of an aesthetic mistake. gene can play some dnb stuff, but that whole vibe reeked of 'mistake'...

sorry to rain on the parade for a second there... patterson's tone is pretty rediculous, though, at least for the fingerstyle stuff.

chicago does indeed have some KILLING players.

Ok, I don't feel so bad about my thoughts now that Ken spoke up before me. I think the tune is just played too fast...but man does this bring back memories to ~ 1991 or so when this album came out. So many great tunes with an overall hipness to the whole album, and kind of an end-of-era vibe with Marcus & Sanborn.

Richard Patterson is drunk-good. What a player. I love his playing! He needs to renew that domain name, though.

From what Richard has told me Sanborn likes certain grooves pushed live especially the more vamp orientated stuff. I asked him about that fact after seeing him with Sanborn live in about '98 (he's been with him a long time) That solo took me back to where I first saw him play,a little basement club called the Bulls which was like the mecca for jazz-funk in Chicago. Allmost everybody on the list of players played there including myself. As for the groove,to each his own but for me it is a example of what I call the "Chicago pocket" grooving, very active with a little edge.

Tangent...sorry...but this reminded me of the first time I heard Richard Patterson. Summer of 1991, on Miles Davis' last tour. Ricky Wellman on drums. Some cat named Kenny Garrett on saxophones. We're talking holy-balls ridiculous!
