Rick Danko on The Brown Album

Sign in to disble this ad
I did some searches, and I couldn't find anything on what equipment Rick used on the Brown Album, so I figured I'd ask some of you scholars on TB.

I'm pretty sure this was before Rick had his ampeg fretless bass, and definitely before his Gibson Rippers. My guess is that it is just a good ol' Precision bass with flats, maybe through an ampeg head, with a pick. It sure has some beautiful warm percussive rumble to it.

Here are two songs from it, to see if any of you can analyze the sound.

Ive read it was a P-bass. I could be wrong though. Regardless, its great to see someone asking about the Brown album! What a record.

Based on clips from the time, I'd say it's a J and Fender backline..

Have you seen Elliot Landy's new book? It looks like he's playing a jazz bass actually at the fillmore east show in 69.

Great documentation from a fine legendary photographer.

The pics dated 1969 at this web site show him with a P-Bass:

King Harvest (Has Surely Come) is one of Mr. Danko's finest moments IMHO.

Rick used a Sunburst Mid-60's Jazz bass with Dylan & the Band.
Around 1966.
For the Brown Album, I believed he used the Jazz and a fretless P-bass.
