The Ventures bassist Bob Bogle passed away yesterday. No details, but evidently he has been in poor health for some time. He was absent at The Ventures' R&R Hall of Fame induction last year, and was not present on the past couple of annual Japan tours.
Bob was originally The Ventures' lead guitarist, and was the lead player on their trademark 1960 hit "Walk, Don't Run". Bob switched to bass after the few albums were released, and he was as great on bass as he was on guitar.
A lot of us old geezers learned how to play guitar and bass listening to Ventures albums. Bob will be sorely missed.

Damn.

Fly on Bob.............

Bob will be sorely missed. | As a result of being in the right place (with the right people) at the right time, I've played bass on a handful of occasions for the great Nokie Edwards (who's thankfully still with us). Although Nokie played bass for the Ventures in the early days, he went on to become a true guitar master!
I suspect that there was a significant falling out at some point between Nokie and Bob & Don -- I've never asked him about that. But that issue doesn't detract from their collective legacy. What a fabulous and original contribution these guys made to rock 'n' roll music!
Respectfully,
Greg Backstrom

My Dad had a music minus version of that album when I was a kid. An early influence. RIP and thanks for the music. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
