Sadly, I just learned that Hugh Hopper, former Soft Machine bassist and unique musical conceptualist passed way today, from leukemia apparently.

I've only gotten into Hugh Hopper in the pat year or so due to forumites who turned me on to him (for which I'm forever indebted). Truly original player...what a huge loss.

Very sorry to hear this - I've been a fan of Soft Machine since the 60s. A thoughtful and challenging musician.

too bad

i can't believe: i saw him live with joung French jazzmen in winter 2007.

I love his music since I could listen Soft in 1973.

Once I mailed him to thank for his bass book (Rock bass manual) and to ask what kind of effects he used, and he was very kind with the answer.

Yeah, when I heard he passed away I was very sad, I love Hugh's lines in everything I've heard so far, an interesting and talented musician.

That's too bad...

His family was actually incredibly mean to me when I sent them my well wishes on him getting better. This is really too bad, I'm sorry to see him go - he's truly a master.
