Iron Butterfly bassist Lee Dorman has passed. He was 70. Died in his vehicle on the way to doctor appointment. RIP

Damn...loved (still do) Captain Beyond's debut album. Got it 40 years ago for Xmas.

His accomplishments weren't limitless, but he added a sound and cadence to the rock bass lexicon that never went away.

I had a book I bought around 1971 that had a few words from him about constructing a bass line. He said that it'd be wrong to just go out and jam in Dmin for "In A Gadda Da Vida", but that it would also be wrong to play it the same way all the time. He'd always be listening to what the others were doing and his line would react to, compliment, or double what others were doing so the music would be alive.

Great advice I took to heart, even before I started playing bass.

He was my high school hero. Iron Butterfly was the first big time rock band I ever heard live. Fans of "that" 70's bass sound should go back and listen to all the Iron Butterfly VINYL, minus Inna Gadda... Sure some the tunes were thin, the singing and organ almost corny, but the sound of Dorman's Mosrite was/is heaven throughout.

Lee Dorman was one of the greats. Iron Butterfly was very popular and ground-breaking, but Captain Beyond was top-shelf incredible! Go over to YouTube and check out their work...if you do so, do yourself a favor...wear headphones or run the audio through decent speakers.

Lee was a big influence on my wanting to learn to play Bass. I remember staring at the Inna Gadda album for hours looking at his Mosrite bass on the cover and listening to his bold and melodic bass lines...RIP Lee and thanks for your influence you're one of the reason I still play Bass today!

I walked a few miles through the snow on Long Island to buy In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida as a youngster. Thanks Lee.
