Although he's best known as a guitarist, don't forget Ron played bass on Raw Power- one of the most brutal albums ever made. His lines were fluid, yet solid and not noodley (especially for a guitarist). And on the reissue, you can hear his playing!

I thought he was an incredible bassist actually.

The purists don't dig Raw Power but....

Man, he wrote some tremendous riffs. Both of the Stooges first two records are GREAT to play along to when you're first starting out and want to play in a rock oriented style. And of course, his bass playing in Raw Power as has been said in this thread is superb. Big loss for music.
