Robert DeLeo = Tone Monster

I know I'm not really going out on a limb with this one as he's pretty lauded around here, but Robert DeLeo is flat out the man. Case in point, this clip from Letterman; the bass part itself is awesome, but check that tone. And he's getting that out of a POD, which blows my mind.

RD is definately the Man. Always been a fan of his playing. He got style too. He looks like an FBI agent in that clip. Kewl.

I can't lie, I'm trying to nail that sound with my POD but can't quite nail it.

RD is one of my favorites.

I've always thought of him as the James Jamerson of hard rock.

Defnitely one of my favorites. Great tone, too. Nice hot grindy tone.

Jamerson was a huge influence on him, and it definitely comes out in his playing. I think he was one of the best rock players from the 90s. The groove in Wicked Garden still blows me away.

Top 5'er for playing for me, probably Top 3 as far as tone goes.

Huge, meaty, fat, aggressive all at the same time. Awesome stuff.

Love that grindy tone. Big Bang Baby has such a monster tone too. Sounds like a buzz saw

PODs and other modeling preamps these days produce some very excellent tones and have made me both a believer + a user.

DeLeo reminds me of a bass-slinging Bruce Campbell meets Agent Smith from the Matrix :-)

... and props on also using Schecter!

De Leo is the man! One of my favorites. He has great tone but his basslines are what drew me to him as a player. I think he's written some of the best basslines. Very tasteful.

LOL yeah I always thought of him as Bruce's half-brother or something.

I kinda got in at the ground level for an STP tribute act that ended up going nowhere b/c the rest of the band wasn't up to snuff, but man- trying to learn his lines "tribute level good" was darn near friggin' impossible even for someone like me who's been playing a long time. I ended up learning about 20 songs and getting them about 85-90% right. Lotsa woodshedding for that cat!

He's definitely what I'd call a 'sleeper shredder'. IMHO, his playing is so tasteful and unobtrusive that you don't realize how intricate it is until you try to learn it.

The first time we played a cover of 'Wicked Garden' live, my bandmates nervously stepped up the tempo way to fast. It almost killed me!

I've always liked his style. Start where he started: Listening to Jamerson. His tone just sounds like a hot P with some grit, to me.

i believe it's the pod x3 live with a qsc power amp into two ampeg 810e's. he said he was able to duplicate his recorded tone exactly with it, and he uses vintage marshall and fender tube amps and blends them.

Wish I could figure it out! I've got pretty much the same set up, and am not quite nailing it. Of course there's variables beyond the gear, but it would be nice to get close.

Haha I totally agree. If I'd had known ahead of time these guys were NOT even going to get close to "tribute good", I'd have slacked off a tad, but yeah- stuff like "Coma" and "Big Empty" aren't things you learn by tab the night before practice...
