Rock bassists that use 5 strings basses?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I got a 5 string bass for last Christmas. Apparently my parents ordered a 4 string, but we got a 5 string. Lol.

Anyways, I want to be able to use that string. So any rock bassists that use 5 string basses?

5's are so out. 6's are the big thing this year.

Korn and POD come to mind, but they're everywhere. What kind of music do you listen to?

Trapt, Breaking Benjamin. There are more, just can't think of them off the top of my head. I will get bashed, but there are quite a few metal bassists that will use a 5-string, or tune to 5-string like tuning.

Some Alice In Chains songs are done on a 5er, Down In a Hole & Them Bones, for example.

What are those metal bands? I listen to some metal.

EDIT: I should say that my 5th string is a low B.

You got it on Christmas, and now in April you're just starting to figure out that it has 5 strings?!

Seriously though, there are many people who play 5 strings now-a-days, they are widely accepted, except by ignorant purists. And, even by some of those

Much of Dream Theater can be played on a 5-string, even though John Myung mostly uses a 6-string.
I believe John Moyer of Disturbed uses exclusively 5-strings.
Jason Newsted has played a 5-string for many Metallica songs ("Sad But True", for example).
Rob Trujillo uses 5-string basses a lot.
The Alter Bridge bassist uses one.

As I've said, they're everywhere.

He does, but a lot of their early songs were 4 string, downtuned. The 5er may be useful here too.

They could probably be done on a downtuned 4 string, to D flat, heh maybe that's what they're doing.

Amon Amarth, Fear Factory, Mudvayne... just watch a bunch of music videos and look for five string basses Also, a good number of bands use 4 strings tuned BEAD, so look up tunings of your favorite bands and rock it! Not to mention that there's plenty of great rock bands that use standard tuning, and when you hit that open E on the fifth fret of your B string, it sounds very full and awesome!

Megadeth used a 5 in at least one song, can't remember which, Slipknot tuned down to B, so you could learn their stuff. Jeroen from Obscura uses a 6, but you may be able to play some with a 5er, Cannibal Corpse. Simply for using the B string, Chevelle, Isis, Parkway drive, Drowning Pool. Here, I will make this easy. Here is a link to a Wiki page of bands that use B tuning. You should be able to play any of this stuff utilizing that raunchy low B. I love me a low B...

On the heavier side Paolo Gregoletto of Trivium uses exclusively 5 string basses, Paul Gray of Slipknot played with a four string BEAD, frequently downtuned, David Ellefson of Megadeth uses a 5 string, the list goes on, alot of the heavier bands feature five string basses.

It really doesn't matter what others are doing! If you like having five strings then that's what counts. At the moment I don't own a five string. I have in the past and would like to have another. Besides the ability to go below E, they give you the option of different hand positions than you can do with a four.
