rofl? im TERRIBLY sorry, I LOVE pink floyd! and waters is a great songwriter, but hes NOT a bass player!!! David Gilmour plays all the pink floyd bass solos and is responsible for the awesome "sound" of pink floyd! (Gilmour even played the pigs bass solo live.. not waters)

I have seen him live at the 06 darkside tour, GREAT show. but hes just NOT somebody whose bassplaying I would ever admire.

Furthermore, when guy pratt replaced him on bass in the 80's, regardless of the lower songwriting quality, its a MASSIVE difference in bass playing quality.

roger waters is a good songwriter and lyricist, but a mediocre player at best.

Oh christ, a David Gilmour fan.

Roger waters is a good basist. he plays it, it would be fun to see david holding a guitar & a bass at the same time

gilmour and wright are the only reason floyd sounds good (regardless of songwriting) waters contributes little to nothing instrumentally and live except for when he sings. (which is fine, but im not about to worship his bass playing)

Sorry if i offend, but hence the "discuss" aspect of this thread, that is my opinion.

ALSO, why do people seem to SIDE with gilmour or waters and then attack the other? they are both good musicians people....

Waters is an unsung hero in my opinion. Great, simple and tasteful. I love technical playing too, but I never subscribed to the false idea that good=a million notes/second....

Oh i totally agree man, simple can be perfect, but I dont feel waters best shows this kind of playing. He gets alot of credit for writing things like the wall, and he does deserve that, but I feel his solo work is complete garbage.

I have never really checked out his solo work. Only familiar with Floyd.

Waters' main talents are undoubtedly as a writer, but his bass playing is right for his own material. His basic 'rock guy' approach to the instrument was a big part of what stopped Floyd sounding like session-man prog soup (unlike the post-Waters years).

Some of the solo work is pretty good (particulary the stuff with Jeff Beck). And 'The Final Cut'? My favourite Floyd album, hands down - but maybe too 'British' an album for American tastes?

I also think that Gilmour receives far too much credit as a bassist-yes, he did play on a couple albums, but the idea that he played a majority of the bass on Floyd's records is an over-exaggeration.

Especially as the bass-playing on Piper and More is fantastic, and it was all Waters.

My band just learned "Let There Be More light" the other day. I wouldn't say a really hard bass line, but it's different and fun to play. (shameless plug time).... www.polkafloyd.com
I think he had some pretty unique lines on the earlier Floyd recorings.

Agreed. Some people need to calm down.

Ever watch Live in Pompei? The clips of him playing exhibits not only his wicked tone, but a good player. Is he the best? **** if I know, but I do know that he bumps with some nice harmony.

Roger Waters and Syd Barrett are Pink Floyd, heart and soul respectively... Gilmour is a fantastic guitar player, Floyd would never have been what it became without him, but the heart of the group was Waters. The creativity was Waters, the songs were Waters, the concept of both albums and live shows were Waters. As a player, basic (he had other things on his mind), and I strongly agree that Pompei must be seen on DVD before he's dismissed. One must also visit The Pros & Cons Of Hitchhiking before putting down his solo work.

And if anyone has the nerve to tell me that Pink Floyd (ugh) after Waters did anything remotely resembling quality, then it's gonna get real smelly in here.

The entire thing about David Gilmore playing all of the basslines in Floyd is a complete exaggeration.

The bottom line is that Roger didn't write songs to showcase his "chops" or do any flashy stuff on bass. He was the chief songwriter in one of the best bands of all time...what else needs to be said? That he wasn't/isn't as good as Vic Wooten or someone like that? Why? Because he doesn't play complicated basslines with groundbreaking technique? He's not gonna write stuff like that...his music is much more far reaching than writing the best "bass solos".
