My first thought was, "do the folks on the DB side get caught up in this kind of nonsense?"

10. Victor Wooten
9. Cliff Burton
8. Jack Bruce
7. Jaco Pastorius
6. John Paul Jones
5. Les Claypool
4. Geddy Lee
3. Paul McCartney
2. Flea
1. John Entwistle

IMHO, notable absentees: Chris Squire, James Jamerson, Geezer Butler, Carol Kaye, Steve Harris, John Myung, Larry Graham, Tim Commerford, Matt Freeman, Charles Mingus.

Here is the page of the list if you're interested:
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/pi...-time-20110331

So... perhaps a Top 10 falls short, and it should have been a Top 20 or 30?
One of these ten would be on my list too .

"Best" is a loaded word. I think "most influential" would be a better list to make. And several of the guys getting dissed are ones who influenced me to start playing. So to each his own...

I don't think Sting would be in there as a 'recognizable' bass player.
Most people wouldn't know he played bass. He's just Sting to them....

Guys. It's rolling stone.

With them, I surprised Lemmy wasn't on there.

As with all top ten lists, we all agree to disagree. No Duck Dunn invalidates for me.

Rolling Stone mag also said Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" is the greatest song of all time. Ask me how I feel about that -_-. Actually, I don't care, because Rolling Stone tends to have very dumb opinions, like saying John Lennon is a better guitarist than Slash. I love John, but he's not in any way better than Slash.

EDIT: on Rolling Stone's greatest guitarists list, Alex Lifeston is only on 98, with Kurt Cobain as 70 something. Go figure.

They probably do, in their own way. "Top Ten Dissonant Jazz Progressions". So begins the War of Flames.

I believe the demographic for Rolling Stone readers is white middle class men who like mainstream rock/classic rock music and have limited exposure to other genres. The list skews in that direction in my opinion.

These top 10's always annoy me. It's not about technique, it's about taste. And as gifted as Jaco and Wooten and Claypool can be, I don't know any of their songs. It's pretty and impressive, but it's not bassplaying to me.

The only time Rolling Stone means anything to pro musicians is before they appear on the cover at the beginning of their career; exposure. After that, it reverts to what it truly is; chaff for the ignorant, tone deaf masses. I mean look at the questions they ask in interviews, just dumb. It is a waste of paper.

Absolutely. Besides, James Jamerson was the best bassist of all time.

If it were top 10 most recognizable, it would make more sense.

Totally. Duck should at least be in the top three.
