Roly Wynne of the Ozrics

Anyone else a fan of this guy? He was bassist for the UK instrumental group, the ozric tentacles, from their birth in 1983until his untimely passing in 92.

From what I can hear, he played a Stingray most of the time and had an AMAZING tone. The crisp bite of the 'ray with added deep punch. Great player, expressive note choice, and monster chops through tough time signatures.

Check out Coily:

And white rhino tea (this one has bad sound but the album version is grea sounding):

And another one called Erpland (title track for an amazing album):

Their albums can be had for very cheap on Amazon, so go and buy a few if you like what you hear! Very fun and informative basslines to learn and play along with.

yesssss, I hear you dude.. That is THE band to play bass in, haha. And their albums shouldn't go for much, with the mass production of them they're hauling.

I am a HUGE Ozric fan, especially the Roly Wynne era stuff. I thought he played a Pbass most of the time. Anyway, he was an excellent bassist who kept their way out music grooving. A few of my favorite bass songs are "The Eternal Wheel" "Tidal Convergence" "Snakepit" "Ayurvedic" "Soda Water" and "White Rhino Tea".

What a band Ozrics are, theyre from a distant future hailing from a far away planet!!! very distinctive yet unique, theyve been doing the space rock/rave rock since the 80s and its took 2 decades for people to cotton onto it, When people ask me to describe them.. I try and nut shell it by saying "think of Pink Floyd meets The Prodigy..." lol!.. Ive got all their material and alot of their stuff does sound similar, but each album is still an addictive and enthralling listen.

they are pretty cool, very silly

if you're ever in London by Chelsea bridge, there is a statue of a naked kid riding a dolphin - that kid is Roly Wynn, his dad was a sculptor.

fun fact #2 - my mate met his future wife at an Ozrics gig. we (that is, me and him) were on magic mushrooms and he had uh, soiled himself.

A friend at university introduced me to the Ozrics and made me a series of tapes of all their albums. I always thought Roly was a very underrated player, he had great basslines and a great feel.

That's cool about the statue in London, it's nice to think that he has been immortalised in some way.

I used to walk passed that statue on my way to work, across the Albert Bridge and there it was. I even read the plaque and never made the connection.

I saw Ozrics about 10 times in the early 90s and they stand out as some of my favourite gigs. Nottingham University and Glastonbury (when they played twice) in 1992 in particular.

I would recommend Strangitude, Erpland and Pungent Effulgent.

I never knew Roly had died. His bass playing was wonderful and an inflence on my playing. I'm glad I saw him play and I'll look out for that statue next time I'm in Chelsea.
