sorry if this has been beat to death I'm kinda new here. I bought the rush in rio video because their music is good and geddy can really shred but I kinda cant stand his attack kinda one finger-ish?? you know what I mean? I don't know, I'd kill for his ability! but it kinda bothers me. just looks awkward. but works for him! is there any reason for his fingerstyle? anybody else notice that or is it just me?

I believe he's stated before that the fewer fingers you can play with, the funkier it gets. Therefore, one finger is the pinnacle of funkyness.

He's not too far off, playing with fewer fingers *does* give a better sound IMO. Maybe it's not for everyone though

a certain guy named Tim Commerford follows and praises that one finger style of Geddy, both these bassist especially Geddy are masters at thier craft. In conclusion you just need to find the one in a million ways that work best for you

I found that some practice with trying to cop Geddy's "wiggling" of the strings (I still can't really do it very well; it's hard) contributed immensely to my "normal" two-finger attack.

I have an interview where he talks about how he found it was "the funkiest way to play" after watching Geddy play and wondering why he did it like that.

The Rush in Rio DVD is a lot of fun to watch. Besides the great bass chops, it's fun to watch the laundry cycle in the background, dryers running laundry in, dryers off, dryers on, people coming out and getting the laundry out....

As for single finger funk, didn't some guy named Jamerson do that awhile back?

So then 0 fingers would be even funkier?

What about a certain Funk Brother named James Jamerson?

i like the 1 finger style a lot. i only use it when my middle finger is mad at me though. Geddy Lee is one of my favorite bassists.

come to think about it I play with one finger usually myself he just looks funny doing it! I'm not saying it's stupid or a bad way to play I just wondered why it was!
